Guidelines for Promoting the new Associate Membership Level within Your SectionThe Associate Membership is meant to encourage membership to a broader demographic. Here are a few areas that we feel are prime targets:- Early career technical and creative professionals (similar to our current membership but just starting their careers)
- Nontechnical professionals that work side by side some of our members…the idea here is that “you can only go so far without understanding the technology” – many professionals that are growing their careers may want to join at $35 per year just to have access to SMPTE 365 as a resource to better understand the industry/technology/people
- Shoulder industry – so this would perhaps be someone that is an engineer in a similar field…say maybe on the delivery side that wants to better understand the technology on the content and content management side of the business. They may have a main tech membership in another association (or likely more than one) but for $35 would try us out to see if they find value in the networking opportunity and the information they can glean from the professional community (SMPTE 365)
This is who we should NOT be encouraging:- We should NOT be looking to lapsed members within the last year. If someone has financial hardship due to job loss or anything else, they can apply for Temporary Dues Relief for one year through the Membership Department. By Board action, this is not a membership level to downgrade to.
- I know that you may be thinking…what about folks that have left us that might want to come back? I would say that if someone has been out of SMPTE for a year and wants to REJOIN as an associate member, there is an opportunity for us to approve it. However, to encourage folks to do that if they just lapsed a few months ago is NOT appropriate. That would be encouraging people to downgrade.
