SMPTE Section Nominating Committee


As part of your duties as Section Chair, you need to form a Section Nominating Committee. The purpose of this committee is to select candidates for consideration as nominees for:
  • Governor(s) to run in the 2008 SMPTE Election for terms beginning January 1, 2009; and
  • Section member candidates to run in the 2008 Section Elections for terms beginning July 1, 2008.

Formation of Section Nominating Committee in January 2008

As prescribed in the Society Bylaws, the Section Nominating Committee is made up of seven voting members of the Section. The past section chair usually chairs this committee, if not available then a former section chair should be selected. Please form the committee in the following manner:

  • 3 Members NOT currently serving on the Section Board of Managers

The Section Nominating Committee MUST be formed, and names submitted to headquarters by January 14, 2008.

SMPTE Bylaws Section 5

Subsec. A. Section Nominating Committee

Before the first Monday in January, the Chairperson of the Section shall appoint seven voting members of the Section to form a Section Nominating Committee. The Committee shall consist of the Section Past-Chairperson (or a former Section Chairperson if the Past-Chairperson is not available) who shall act as Chairperson, the Section Chairperson, two other members of the Board of Managers who are serving in the first year of a two-year term, and three other voting members of the Section who are not members of the Board of Managers.


Subsec. B. Nominations

The Section Nominating Committee shall nominate one or more persons for the offices of Section Chairperson and Secretary-Treasurer, and at least two but no more than three persons for each Manager's office to be filled. All nominees shall be voting members of the Section. Nomination shall be made by three-fourths affirmative vote of the Section Nominating Committee.


In addition, each Section Nominating Committee shall select, for consideration by the SMPTE Nominating Committee, two or more persons for each Governor's position to be filled in their respective Region.

Subsec. C. Approval of Nominations

The Section Nominating Committee shall determine that nominees are willing and able to accept the position if elected. No later than the first Monday of February, the list of persons selected for consideration as nominees for Governor shall be forwarded to the Chairperson of the SMPTE Nominating Committee through Headquarters. No later than the last Monday of February, the list of nominees for Section offices shall be presented to the Section Board of Managers. Nominations shall be final unless any nominee is rejected by a three-fourths vote of the Board of Managers, and in the event of such rejection, the Board of Managers shall make its own nomination by majority vote of the members present.

Subsec. D. Election

The list of nominees as approved by the Board of Managers shall be forwarded to the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society at Headquarters no later than the first Monday of March. No later than the third Monday of March, the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society shall cause a letter ballot to be mailed to each voting member of the Society residing in the geographical area covered by the Section.


On the ballot, under each office to be filled, the names of those candidates approved by the Section Board of Managers shall be listed along with a blank space in which the name of any other voting member of the Society may be written in. Appropriate space shall be provided on the ballot to indicate a single choice of candidate for each office.

The ballots having been returned to the Secretary/Treasurer at Headquarters in accordance with the accompanying instructions before or on the last Monday of April shall be delivered to the Committee of Tellers appointed by the President. Said Committee shall tabulate the votes not later than the first Monday of May. The election of candidates shall be by plurality vote and, in case of tie, the choice shall be decided by lot. Announcement of the results shall be communicated promptly to the respective Sections.

The newly elected officers shall take office on July 1 of the same year.


Selection of Governor Candidates

The Section Nominating Committee is to select, for consideration by the SMPTE Nominating Committee, two or more persons for each Governor(s) position to be filled in their corresponding Region. Click here for a spreadsheet containing Governor positions open for each Region.

The Section Nominating Committee is to determine that the nominees are willing and able to accept the position if elected. All nominees must be active and voting members of the Society.

According to the Bylaws, "No later than the first Monday of February, the list of persons selected for consideration as nominees for Governor shall be forwarded to the Chairperson of the SMPTE Nominating Committee through Headquarters." Your recommendation(s) will then be forwarded to Charles Jablonski, Chair of the Society's Nominating Committee, for further consideration by this committee at its first meeting of the year.


Selection of Section Officers and Managers

Step 1:
The Section Nominating Committee is to nominate one or more persons for the offices of Section Chair and Secretary/Treasurer, and, if possible, at least TWO but no more than three persons for each Manager's office position to be filled. All nominees must be voting SMPTE Members. Nominations shall be made by three-fourths affirmative vote of the Section Nominating Committee.

Slate of Candidates:

Chair:    (1 or more candidates)
Secretary/Treasurer: (1 or more candidates)
Manager #1: (2 or 3 candidates)
Manager #2: (2 or 3 candidates)
Manager #3: (2 or 3 candidates)


Step 2:
According to the Bylaws, "No later than the last Monday of February, the list of nominees for Section offices shall be presented to the Section Board of Managers. Nominations shall be final unless any nominee is rejected by a three-fourths vote of the Board of Managers. In the event of such rejection, the Board of Managers shall make its own nomination by majority vote of the members present."

Please present the list of nominees to the Section Board of Managers no later than Monday, February 25, 2008 for review and final approval.

Step 3:
The next step, according to the Bylaws, "the list of nominees as approved by the Board of Managers shall be forwarded to the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society at Headquarters no later than the first Monday of March."

Please submit the list of nominees (Final Slate of Candidates), and a completed candidate form on each nominee to me at SMPTE Headquarters, no later than Monday, March 3, 2008. Click here for a Section Election Candidate Biography Form.

The Section Election will begin Monday, March 17, 2008. The list of all nominees and biographies must reach Headquarters by March 3rd for printing and distribution by March 17th. Please be advised that if no biography is received, none will appear on the "Candidate Information Sheet" during the election.
