Since 1918 when Bill Redpath became the first Canadian (and Torontonian) to join SMPTE, the Toronto Section of the Society Of Motion Picture And Television Engineers has been one of the most active and innovative sections within the organization. With well over 400 members and with meetings that have been known to draw as many as 200, its volunteer Board Of Managers annually executes an aggressive, relevant, and corporately neutral program that goes well beyond the ten section meetings that it runs each season. The Toronto Sections program includes presentations from many of the industries top engineers and innovators, often includes facility tours and includes semi-annual technical seminars such as the sections popular "Boot Camps", that concentrates advanced learning over two days in a local Toronto venue. Toronto Section meetings are held ten times a year and are normally held on the second Tuesday of each month excluding the months of July and August. Meetings are designated as either Open or for Members Only. Membership in the Toronto Section of SMPTE has its privileges through its “Members Only” meetings that usually occur on several occasions and normally consist of broadcast/film production facility tours or screenings. Open SMPTE meetings are usually more presentation based and provide an opportunity for those new to the industry or those considering SMPTE to join us for a meeting. The 08-09 Toronto Section Program included “Members Only” meetings that toured Rogers Sportsnet, THE SCORE and Filmport. These tours are designed to provide our members with an insider view on how these operations are technologically put together, as well as how they operate.
SMPTE And The Toronto Sections Educational Focus
SMPTE's Toronto Sections reach extends well beyond the GTA covering an area that extends westward from the Province of Quebec to Victoria Island in British Columbia and northward from the American Border to the northern territories that include Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut making it one of SMPTE's largest sections. As such the Toronto Section is educationally focused streaming most of its meetings live to the internet so remote SMPTE members in Canada and around the globe can participate in SMPTE meetings of interest. In keeping with it's educational focus the Section maintains an archive library of its meetings that are available on demand globally via its website and date back as far as 1985.
Education for SMPTE members extends far beyond that offered by the Toronto Section. Members of The Society Of Motion Picture And Television Engineers have access to a variety of seminars and publications. They include The Journal --available in print or PDF--, the SMPTE Professional Development Academy (SMPTE PDA), --a series of live interactive seminars that are available live as a streamed event or for download from the SMPTE's PDA web based archive--, and streamed archived recording of presentations made at SMPTE's Technical Conferences.
