Career Opportunity in SMPTE Engineering

General Description

Not just IT!

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has an opening for a Manager of Engineering Services.  SMPTE is a non-profit Individual Member Organization (IMO) with approximately 6,000 members, and a Standards Development Organization (SDO).  The organization currently has 11 employees, and is based in White Plains, NY.  The Society’s Engineering Department supports a committee structure of approximately 750 volunteer members working on the development and maintenance of standards for the television and motion picture industries, and has received both Emmy and Oscar awards for its work.  We are looking for an Information Technology and Standards Development professional to manage and support a range of services, and to enhance the efficiency of the organization by the introduction of modern techniques.
The successful applicant will hold a BS degree or similar qualification, and will likely have obtained some IT-related certification.  S(he) will have a working knowledge in at least most of the following  areas:
•    Desktop support and development of templates for MS Office applications
•    Access databases
•    MS Server 2003
•    Security, including firewall configuration, backup strategies and implementation
•    IP telephone systems
•    Sharepoint services
•    Document publication and protection
•    HTML and XML
•    Web hosting with Apache
•    Support of 3rd party web services and e-commerce

But, this is not a job for an IT “purist”!  If your ambition is to manage ever-larger IT departments, this is NOT the job for you!  We are looking for someone to bring IT expertise to the team, to work proactively to help improve operations by deploying modern tools, but above all to be a member of the team to support the standards activities and contribute to the work of the Society.  Knowledge of television and/or movie technology and/or business would be an advantage, but is not essential for someone willing to learn.  Good communication skills are essential.
The successful applicant will be based in White Plains, NY, but there will be requirements for travel, both domestic and international.  Benefits, including health insurance, will be offered.
