About Your Security and Privacy

SMPTE values your privacy and personal information. We collect data in order to provide better services. It is the policy of SMPTE to collect and store only personal information that is knowingly provided.

There are a number of areas in the SMPTE website where we collect personal information. Where we do, it is in order to serve you better as a member, or is necessary to accomplish the service you are requesting. Examples include membership information (which may include name, address, email, or telephone number), security identifiers, shipping information, and product purchase information stored in online shopping carts. Members' names and member grades are listed in the Online Directory, which lists a legal disclaimer that it not be used for commercial purposes.

Occasionally, SMPTE makes membership information available for special offers from qualified, relevant businesses and organizations, but SMPTE does not share e-mail addresses with any outside parties.

Emails

SMPTE sends emails regarding national and local SMPTE events, news, and pertinent information. SMPTE’s local listservs are used by their respective SMPTE Section Officer/s to send email announcements about Local Section events, and can be opted out of.

Credit Card Transactions

Credit Card processing is accomplished using secure processing services. SMPTE uses VeriSign as our e-commerce online transaction terminal. For more information on VeriSign, go to www.verisign.com.

Regardless of the precautions taken by SMPTE, VeriSign, and yourself, the security of information passed across the internet cannot be guaranteed, and so SMPTE cannot ensure the security of any information you transmit to this site, and you transmit such information at your own risk.

Use of "Cookies"

Cookies are implemented in various parts of the SMPTE site, such as when you’re ordering something in the SMPTE Store. The use of cookies is discretionary by you, and declining cookies will usually result only in loss of certain conveniences such as session continuity and re-authentication during current or future sessions. However, denying cookies can also interfere with access to the SMPTE Online Journal, so do be aware that certain types of persistent and per-Session (Transient) cookies can be used with any one service, and their implementations, behaviors, and effects might vary.

Links to Third Parties

This Site contains links to other sites. SMPTE is not responsible for the terms or privacy practices of sites you’re delivered to from the SMTPE Site.

Legal Requests

SMPTE cooperates with law enforcement inquiries, as well as other third parties, to enforce laws. We can (and you authorize us to) disclose any information about you to law enforcement or other government officials as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate, in connection with an investigation of fraud, intellectual property infringements, or other activity that is illegal or may expose us, service or content providers we work with, or you to possible legal liability.
