The SMPTE Sum-Up-May-25,2023

May 25, 2023

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

SID Display Week kicked off on Monday, and everyone in the world of imaging and display is excited to be part of it. This week-long display extravaganza features classes, lectures, conferences, and roundtables, all of which are led and attended by the biggest names in the industry. There was even a job fair for those looking to expand their media horizons! Events like these are important for SMPTE members. It’s an opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, and even attend the occasional afterparty. The event goes on until May 26th.

Our friends across the pond at SMPTE UK hosted a lovely event with food, drinks, and a discussion on why the film industry needs to utilize cloud technology. Cutting Through the Hype: SMPTE UK and Cloud Native Media was spearheaded by SMPTE UK Education Director Polly Hickling who said, “This event has led to diversity both in the people in the room and the conversations that take place, which is what allows us to progress in the technical fields we work in. I’m really keen to keep collaborating and thinking outside of the box with the events that we put on to insure this diversity and progress continues.” The night was educational, inspirational, and an all-around positive experience for the media technology industry.

In terms of future events, the final Call for Papers for this year’s Media Technology Summit is happening this week. Abstracts are due on May 30th, so potential applicants have just one week left to submit. Abstracts should address technical theory, research, innovation, application, or practice of evolving technologies in the media and entertainment industry. Student submissions are welcome and encouraged! This is your opportunity to showcase how you and/or your company are transforming the industry, so submit those abstracts today!

Speaking of the Media Technology Summit, the Booth Selection Meeting happened earlier this week and 25 of the 58 booths have officially been spoken for! Having a booth at the summit gives you and your company the chance to network with industry leaders and cement your place in said industry. It’s also a chance to check out what other companies are up to, and even catch up with friends. Industry leaders from around the world will be at the Media Technology Summit. Will you? To claim one of the remaining booths, contact our Executive Account Manager, Anthony Catalano.

That’s it for this week’s SMPTE Sum-Up. For more information on past and current events, standards projects, and webcasts, visit our website. See you next week!
