"I am pleased to say that my answer, at the end of my first week of full-time employment, is the same as in my first interview, “I like serving the engineers, scientists, and artists.” The people who make things happen without getting much recognition are the recipients of the “hmmm … .” followed by silence when they tell people what they do for a living."

Introduction to the 2022 SMPTE Progress Report
Greetings all, and welcome to the 2022 SMPTE Progress Report. This year has shown us that the only constant is change. As the world continues to rise from the pandemic and our industry attempts to continue solving the myriad of issues that are presenting themselves, we, as engineers, creative technologists, scientists, content creators, and visionaries, continue to press forward toward innovation.
Welcome to the SMPTE Standards Community progress report 2022
My top priority as Standards Vice President is to make our Standards (and other publications of the Standards Community) more accessible. I believe it is of critical importance that interested folks can discover and access our publications with as little friction as possible, using the tools they are used to. To make this a reality, members of the Standards Community and SMPTE staff collaborated on a landing page1 for the Interoperable Master Format (IMF) standards suite.
Update on SMPTE’s Rapid Industry Solutions (RIS) On-Set Virtual Production (OSVP) Initiative
SMPTE’s Rapid Industry Solutions (RIS) program was designed to give the Society an agile, responsive framework through which to address emerging industry needs. Working with partners across the industry, SMPTE identified on-set virtual production (OSVP) as a suitable subject for its first RIS initiative, the SMPTE RIS OSVP initiative, which launched one year ago.
Three universities of applied sciences — the Hochschule der Medien (HdM), Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM), and Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt (HSHL) — have earned approval to launch Germany’s first SMPTE Student Chapter. The new SMPTE Student Chapter will be the first jointly hosted chapter, leveraging the resources of all three institutions to engage and support students through educational and networking opportunities that support a future in media technology and digital entertainment fields.
“Students, educators, and researchers today are eager for opportunities to learn about emergent technologies — media in the cloud, data, virtual production, and others — and to connect with the people and companies setting the course for the future,” said SMPTE Executive Director David Grindle.
Student Outreach Efforts by the SMPTE Membership Committee
The SMPTE Membership Committee, formerly under the leadership of Renard Jenkins and more recently that of Rose Lockwood, has continued its focus on outreach to students. Although the creation and support of SMPTE Student Chapters continue to be a primary means of engagement, the committee is dedicated to developing new ways of connecting to potential future members.
