The entire world has been affected by the pandemic for more than a year. Another important shift has been around social movements and with that, the increased focus, or recalibration, around DEI—diversity, equity, and inclusion. Of course, the DEI movement is not new. It has been percolating for many years with periodic bursts of greater visibility. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was created five years ago to highlight the lack of diversity among award nominees. The #MeToo movement highlighted sexual abuse and harassment in the workplace, primarily against women, since 2017. These and other movements shed light on such issues in our culture and society around the world. After all, we are humans who need to be reminded on a regular basis how to live and work with people from different backgrounds. Read more from Barbara Lange.

Big Picture!
During this year’s Olympic games, 9000 hours of sports will be broadcast over 17 days, with a significant portion of that in UHD-2/8K ultrahigh-definition format. When you consider that the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) will be 30% smaller than it was in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it really emphasizes the advances made in remote production. Envisioning the Future of Media Production Application Interconnectivity and Workflow
As media production workflows increase in scale and complexity, interoperability is more important than ever. That’s why SMPTE has chartered an expert study group to explore prospective Media Industry layering models and standards requirements for production application interoperability on IP networks. While there has been tremendous progress in transport layer specifications, such as SMPTE ST 2110, there remains a great many elements of an overall IP-based media ecosystem that have either been addressed in more than one way, incompletely, or not at all. Industry’s First Microservices Standards Available for Free (from TVTechnology.com)
Microservices is a rapidly evolving area of the media industry, and SMPTE is using its new Public Committee Draft (public CD) documents to make the first two candidate standards available to implementers now, for free.
Public CDs give media technology suppliers an early look at near-complete standards, as well as an opportunity to provide feedback, which is vital to the quality and utility of the final, approved standard. In addition to accelerating the standards review process, public CDs enable implementation right now based on the future standard. Learn more
Cloud Media Club
On June 24th at 12 Noon ET we’ll be joined by David Klee, VP Media Supply Chain at A+E Networks, and by Brinton Miller, formerly the Executive Vice President - Technology, Strategy and Operations at Discovery Inc.
Last fall, rivals A+E and Discovery formed a new streaming alliance. David and Brinton will share with us how being in the cloud enabled implementation of this initiative with a speed that could not have happened with on-premises operations. Join us for a lively discussion as we explore how the cloud transformed their ability to share content and launch this service. Learn more, and register Learn more, and register!
