Many aspects of media production have migrated to the Cloud as the industry evolves. The Journal's October Cloud-themed issue looks at how to integrate cloud production pipelines; identifies ways to bridge the gap between on-premise vs. broadcast and cloud-based online video delivery workflows; and considers how live standards conversion can be supported in a fully cloud-based workflow. The trial network and measurement results for UHDTV and the single-frequency network are presented in non-themed papers, as is ensuring good depth perception on light field displays. Is It Cloudy Out There?
When I worked at the IEEE, the Institute would issue predictions for the upcoming decade’s technology trends. I do not remember the exact year, but I distinctly recall a forecast that in the next ten years, we would share computing power in “the cloud.” The term “the cloud” conjured up images of this network of computers floating in the sky, all connected. I could not quite figure out how my little laptop (or maybe it was still a desktop) would be taking advantage of this service. I figured this would only be useful to big companies. ST 2067-60 IMF Application #6 UHDTV program workflow (AVC) – Second Public Committee Draft (Public CD)
A Public Committee Draft is on the SMPTE GitHub repository for industry review and feedback.
Re-rendering and re-QC of a completed master program file prior to its broadcast is often needed due to late-stage editorial changes required by program producers that involve editing to make additions or corrections to the program content. The full-scale re-rendering and re-QC from beginning to end of a master program file are very heavy load processes in terms of the time taken and the storage capacity involved in the creation of multiple file versions, especially for beyond-HD image sizes such as UHDTV. The Challenge of Reproducing Depth Perception on a Light Field Display
In the October 2021 issue of The SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, a featured technical paper describes all the ways natural human vision creates depth perception by exploiting information called depth cues. The brain captures information through the eyes, and analyzes these cues to understand a complex 3D scene. Read more

The job board is under the “Discover” header, so please post or visit today to discover your new job – or find that perfect employee among your SMPTE peers!
RP 428-22 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Minimal Timed Text XML Requirements Public Committee Draft (Public CD)
View Throughout the timeline of a D-Cinema composition, there can be periods of time where no Timed Text is required due to the editorial nature of the content and how a scene is being portrayed. For example, a scene that encompasses a long establishing shot with localised on-screen text. Localization best practices result in these localised instances being delivered as their own unique reel. A reel that requires no Time Text content. D-Cinema manufacturing best practices, as defined in SMPTE RDD 52 – SMPTE Application Bv2.1, stipulates that should D-Cinema essence be present for one reel, said essence shall be present across all reels that comprise the composition.
