Digital Cinema
Digital Cinema marks a major transition for the motion picture industry. In this SMPTE PDA Now webcast guest speaker David Reisner surveys the current (transitional) digital work flow from cinema digital intermediate, post production and mastering, through to distribution and exhibition. We also explore how work flow may eventually change as we move to solely digital exhibition. In addition, a description of the difference between digital cinema and video, and an explanation of the role of SMPTE standards in defining the future digital cinema environment.

2008 SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition Call For Papers
SMPTE is seeking proposals for technical papers and tutorials for presentation during the 2008 SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition. Proposed papers are to be informational in nature and must address technical theory, application, or practice associated with technologies relevant to the Motion Imaging Industry. Interested parties are invited to submit a one-page abstract to be considered.

Technical paper proposals must be submitted to SMPTE no later than June 6, 2008. [More information]

Lou Wolf Memorial Scholarship
The Lou Wolf Memorial Scholarship is designed to help students further their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion picture and television, with an emphasis on technology. The amount of the scholarship will be up to $2,000. [Apply Now]

SMPTE Student Paper Award
The purpose of this award to recognize the outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a Student Member. The paper receiving the Student Paper Award will be published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, giving recognition to the author and the institution at which the work was done. The Award winner will also receive a full conference registration to the 2009 SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition in Hollywood, CA, where they will be recognized at the Honors and Awards Ceremony. SMPTE/EBU Joint Task Force Issues Request for Technology
The Task Force has completed the first part of its work in collecting and reviewing user requirements for future synchronizing systems and time-related labeling. The Request for Technology (RFT) invites submissions of candidate technologies. Concept proposals are welcome, as well as complete or partial solutions. Responses are due by May 1, 2008.
