SMPTE to Establish 3-D Home Entertainment Task Force
SMPTE is establishing a task force to define the parameters of a stereoscopic 3-D mastering standard for content viewed in the home. Called 3-D Home Display Formats Task Force, the project promises to propel the 3-D home entertainment industry forward by setting the stage for a standard that will enable 3-D feature films and content to be distributed to the home via broadcast, cable, satellite, packaged media, computer screens, and more. The inaugural meeting of the Task Force will take place on August 19, 2008 and will be hosted by the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) at the University of Southern California, near downtown Los Angeles. "BFX Inside and Out"
Development of the BXF (Broadcast eXchange Format) Standard was one of the more popular standardization activities in recent years within SMPTE, with more than 150 individuals contributing to the process (SMPTE 2021). The standard was published in April after more than three years of work. BXF is primarily targeted at enabling systems to exchange schedule, as run, and content metadata, as well as content transfer requests. Please join us for a better understanding of what BXF is, how it works, and what it does.

SMPTE PDA Now is free to SMPTE members and $49 for nonmembers. Participation is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. SMPTE Members receive SMPTE Professional Development Academy services free of charge, or nonmembers at a substantially discounted cost, because of the generosity of our current sponsors. Sponsorship opportunties are available by contacting Joel Welch at jwelch@smpte.org.

New SMPTE PDA Anywhere Recordings Available
HDTV Transition: Managing Aspect Ratio from Camera to the Home
The introduction of HDTV and wide screen 16:9 aspect ratio images into the video world has brought a number of challenges for production, distribution, and displays. This applies particularly where 4:3 and 16:9 formats and images have to coexist in a broadcast facility or within a program. The newest SMPTE PDA Now Anywhere session covers Active Format Description (AFD) and how it may be used to manage 4:3 and 16:9 images in the broadcast studio environment and to optimize images for display on consumer televisions. It also covers some recommended techniques for downconversion of HD signals for distribution to NTSC receivers via cable and satellite. The SMPTE, ATSC and CEA standards relating to AFD and Bar Data will be explained, and experience gained in practical implementation in a broadcast facility will be shared. [View New Content]
