SMPTE Executive Director, Kimberly Maki Steps Down:

Good Luck and Best Wishes!

After three years of service to SMPTE, Kimberly Maki has stepped down as Executive Director to pursue a new professional opportunity as the Vice President of Corporate Communications for Bright House Networks.

During her three years with SMPTE, Kimberly was an unrelenting advocate worldwide for advancement of the engineering profession on a strategic leadership level. She represented SMPTE well, and we as an organization benefitted from her belief in the Society, our mission, and work. We will continue to feel the positive effects from her vision for the on-going development and expansion of SMPTE for a long time to come.

A search committee chaired by Charlie Jablonski, has begun the task of identifying potential candidates for the Executive Director position. We will report their progress to you regularly. In the meantime, the SMPTE staff will continue to support the membership as well as the upcoming Annual SMPTE Tech Conference and Expo We hope to see you in Hollywood in October.

But for the moment, please join me in wishing Kimberly future success as she takes on a new corporate role within the cable telecommunications industry.

Good luck Kimberly!

SMPTE PDA Now: Stereoscopic displays in the home

Guest Speaker: Chris Chinnock, Insight Media

September 24, 2009 at 1:00 PM Eastern/11:00 AM Pacific

Most of us are now aware of or have experienced stereoscopic 3D in the movie theaters.  There is, however, a tremendous amount of activity underway to bring the experience and glasses-free, autostereoscopic technology to the home.  For notebooks, monitors, TVs and home theater projectors, several 3D technologies are starting to enter the home.  For small screens, 3D technology is starting to be commercialized for use in cellphones/smartphones, camera systems and picture frames.  Creating the 3D ecosystem requires content, a delivery mechanism and a display system.  Please join our guest speaker Chris Chinnock as he explores the various platforms available for the home, describes basic in-home display approaches, updates us on the status of current products and shares the expectations for future products.

NEW at the SMPTE Store!

DSC LabsSMPTE is pleased to announce its new relationship with DSC Laboratories. DSC Labs produces a complete range of precision test patterns - color bars, patented neutral grayscales, hyperbolic resolution wedges, etc. These are available from SMPTE In many sizes and formats, from Pocket to the SuperMaxi, nearly five feet wide. DSC test patterns are intuitive to use, because they mimic familiar electronic signals. Front-lit CamAligns and the rear-lit Ambi systems make life easier for both engineers and production personnel.  CamAligns are used everywhere from deep in the ocean to outer space.  The Ambi/Combi System, while primarily used in laboratory applications, has also become a familiar production and engineering tool at networks and motion picture studios. DSC also has products for law enforcement, security and medical applications.”

For the complete range of DSC products, please visit the SMPTE store under Test Materials.
