SMPTE/VSF Conference —Registration Still Available

The Television Engineering Technology Committees meet quarterly. Upcoming dates include: March 3-7, 2008 at XILINX Incorporated in Longmont, Colorado and June 16-20, 2008 at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington.
 
The Digital Cinema Technology Committee meets quarterly. The next meeting is February 27-29, 2008 at AMPTP in Sherman Oaks, California
 
SMPTE engineering standards committees are due process and open to all those materially affected by ongoing activities.

Lou Wolf Memorial Scholarship

The Lou Wolf Memorial Scholarship is designed to help students further their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion pictures and television, with an emphasis on technology. The amount of the scholarship will be up to $2,000. [Apply Now]

SMPTE Student Paper Award

The purpose of this award to recognize the outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a Student Member. The paper receiving the Student Paper Award will be published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, giving recognition to the author and the institution at which the work was done. The Award winner will also receive a full conference registration to the 2009 SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition in Hollywood, CA, where they will be recognized at the Honors and Awards Ceremony. Obituary

The Society sadly announces that Edward P. Hobson, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2008, after a long illness.

Ed joined SMPTE in 1984 and served the Society in numerous capacities, including Conference Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Editorial Vice President, President, and most recently Past President. A SMPTE Fellow since 1994, Ed was co-founder of the SMPTE Sacramento Section and was devoted to strengthening and expanding the Society through education, standards activities, and as a worldwide leader in the television and motion picture industries. He was a main organizer and co-chair of the SMPTE-sponsored and produced, Digital Cinema Summit at NAB. He also served as a voting member of the Technical Emmy committee of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Ed was also the SMPTE Representative and member of the IBC Conference Committee and produced the IBC Content Production Day in 2006.

An East Coast memorial will be held on Saturday, February 16th, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace St. Paul Episcopal Church in Mercerville, NJ. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Foothills in Ed’s name.
