President Ken Fuller announces New SMPTE Executive Director: Barbara H. Lange
I am pleased to announce that Ms. Barbara H. Lange has agreed to join the SMPTE as our next Executive Director. Barbara joins us from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Barbara is an outstanding professional and a superior match for the SMPTE's unique organizational development and membership growth requirements going forward, She most recently served as Staff Director of Product Management and Business Development for the IEEE with responsibility for $130 million-plus in annual revenue, an operating budget of $2 million, and a staff of 20.
On behalf of the Executive Committee and Search team, we are thrilled to have a professional of Barbara's standing and experience join the SMPTE team. Her vision and proven effectiveness in creating new revenue generation opportunities and growing membership will stand the Society in good stead as we execute our strategic plan for aggressive and successful growth particularly as the applications and markets for motion-imaging technologies expand and proliferate.
Barbara will be joining us on January 20th in time for the Executive Committee meeting and the Board of Governors meeting in New York in January.
I would like to thank all those involved in the effort and especially the search committee, Charlie Jablonski, Gavin Schutz, and Clyde Smith, and to the Executive Committee for their help, support, and suggestions during our process.

So don't get left behind on the "learning curve" just because you don't have time to participate in the live SMPTE PDA Now events. Go to www.smpte365.org to access the 2009 SMPTE PDA Anywhere archives!
SMPTE's Wiki Needs YOU!
Ever wish there was a list of terms and definitions that pertained specifically to the areas that SMPTE covers? Well, not only has SMPTE started one, but your help is needed to expand it. That's right, there is a SMPTE Wiki on SMPTE 365 just waiting for SMPTE Members to submit useful terms, formulae, and definitions!
Imagine if every SMPTE Member submitted only one item to the SMPTE Wiki, there would be well over 5,000 items. THAT would be a tremendous resource to all SMPTE Members. To add your term or definition, please go to www.smpte365.org. There is a link right on the home page. It couldn't be easier. Can you do it today?
File-based Workflows in Broadcast & Production: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
February 9, 2010
This program will discuss the differences between baseband television production processes and more contemporary techniques using file based approaches.
The conference will present a sound foundation in Information Technology (IT) concepts and principles as they relate to real time media and non real time production techniques. This will support material presented on file-based workflows in the context of broadcast television operations, television news, file-based content distribution networks, episodic program production and corporate video post production. Sessions will also provide practical guidance on conversion from production using baseband audio & video to file-based processes. Finally, the use of metadata, archives, and asset management will be discussed.
Registration Opens Soon!
2009 SMPTE Tech Conference Recordings Coming in April
As you may know, SMPTE records the technical sessions at each SMPTE Tech Conference. These video recordings (and synchronized slides) are made available immediately to full conference attendees and Executive Level SMPTE Members.
Because you are a SMPTE Member, however, these video recordings will also become available to you in April 2010 as a complimentary member benefit. So stay tuned for details about how to access the recordings. Another excellent SMPTE Member benefit!
VANC Survey Extended until January 10, 2010
SMPTE is conducting an important worldwide survey, and we are reaching out to all television broadcasters and TV equipment manufacturers to obtain as much information as possible. This survey is NOT restricted to SMPTE members so, if you have any close contacts in the business who might not receive this message, please feel free to forward the invitation to them.
Users of vertical ancillary space (VANC) data (TV stations, networks, studios, other facilities) and also manufacturers of associated equipment are requested to take part in an industry survey regarding the location of data packets carried in the VANC space of serial digital video signals. This involves data such as AFD/Bar Data (for aspect ratio control), closed captions, time code, program description, audio metadata, film transfer data, and many others.
SMPTE has an initiative to harmonize the use of VANC data, to reduce problems with implementation. Please contribute to this important activity by completing the on-line survey at:
If collecting and collating the information is complex you may wish to print the appropriate survey page (user or manufacturer) and assemble the data before completing the survey online.
Many thanks to those who already responded; to ensure that our data is as complete as possible we have extended the survey, and it will now remain open until January 10, 2010.
