San Francisco Section Has Successful kick-off Meeting
and great plans for 17 March!

The newly revitalized San Francisco Section held its first meeting for 2011 on 24 February at HDI in Los Gatos. The subject was Laser & LCoS Technology in Image Displays. Fifty attendees heard CEO Ingemar Jansson, and Chief Scientist Edmund Sandberg talk about their novel display technology using their own proprietary LCoS devices with laser illumination that can be used in both front and rear projection applications. Thanks to meeting organizer John Hartwell, SMPTE San Francisco Section Manager for a great program.

If you are in the area, be sure to attend our 17 March meeting at Aspera HQ in Emeryville, CA.  The topic will be Petabytes in Motion: Ultra High-Speed Transport of Media Files over Global Networks. Michelle Munson, President and CEO of Aspera, along with her R & D team, will explain their findings in testing ultra-high-speed file transfers with enterprise storage and cloud computing providers, and particular technology solutions that Aspera and its partners have developed to overcome the bottlenecks and resource sharing problems that occur in the network transport, the file systems and storage, and in virtual machines themselves, for the movement of large media files and large sets of files.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Please join us for a lively evening of discussion at the Aspera offices in Emeryville.  For more details, please visit the San Francisco Section website.

New Engineering Documents

The following SMPTE Engineering Documents were published during February 2011. Links to the documents in the SMPTE Store are noted below.

SMPTE RDD 19:2011 Television – Guidelines on the Use of Dolby® E with Video Signals at Frame Rates Greater than 30 Hz

http://store.smpte.org/product-p/rdd%2019-2011.htm

Extract from Scope
This document describes how Dolby® E audio codecs can be used in conjunction with Television signals operating at frame rates higher than 30 Hz. Because the Dolby E encoded audio data is normally carried in an AES3 stream, wrapped per SMPTE ST 337, it may be transported separately, or embedded in a video signal. It also provides advice to equipment designers and manufacturers on the requirements of associated equipment and to systems integrators engaged in building complete systems.

SMPTE ST 428-21:2011 Archive Frame Rates for D-Cinema

http://store.smpte.org/product-p/st%200428-21-2011.htm

Extract from Scope
This standard defines archive frame rates for D-Cinema that are in addition to the primary frame rates of 24 and 48 fps and the additional frame rates of 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. These archive frame rates are defined to ensure that the artistic intent of the content producer can be maintained at the point of delivery. All other parameters defined by SMPTE ST 428-1 remain as specified. This document is part of a suite of SMPTE engineering documents. This part defines the archive frame rates at 16/1, 200/11 (=approx 18.18181818), 20/1 and 240/11 (=approx 21.8181818) frames per second and defines the resulting audio samples per edit unit.
