SMPTE 2008 Technical Conference & Exhibition Dates Announced

SMPTE Pre-Conference Symposium Announced
SMPTE announces the 2008 Pre-Conference Symposium, "How Did They Do That? Innovations in Filmmaking and Live Event Broadcast" to be held Monday, October 27, 2008 at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel, Hollywood, CA. This Symposium will present some of the most interesting applications of new technology used to capture the dramatic images from two extremes of programming: live fast-action coverage of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, and the methodical production of the landmark nature footage in the BBC's award winning "Planet Earth" series. Attendees will hear directly from the engineers and producers that refined the production techniques, built the systems, and applied innovative fixes as unexpected challenges arose. 2008 SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition Call For Papers
Position your organization or yourself as a technology leader in the Motion Imaging Industry. Show the world that your organization has the technical knowledge and expertise to innovate and transform the industry. SMPTE is seeking proposals for technical papers and tutorials for presentation during the 2008 SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition. Proposed papers are to be informational in nature and must address technical theory, application, or practice associated with technologies relevant to the Motion Imaging Industry. Interested parties are invited to submit a one-page abstract to be considered.

Lou Wolf Memorial Scholarship Deadline Approaching
The Lou Wolf Memorial Scholarship is designed to help students further their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion picture and television, with an emphasis on technology. The amount of the scholarship will be up to $2,000. The Award winner will also receive a full conference registration to the 2009 SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition in Hollywood, CA, where they will be recognized at the Honors and Awards Ceremony.

SMPTE Student Paper Award
The purpose of this award to recognize the outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a Student Member. The paper receiving the Student Paper Award will be published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, giving recognition to the author and the institution at which the work was done. The Award winner will also receive a full conference registration to the 2009 SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition in Hollywood, CA, where they will be recognized at the Honors and Awards Ceremony.

SMPTE Publishes Landmark SMPTE-2021 (BXF) Standard
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is pleased to announce the publication of a landmark standard, SMPTE-2021 (BXF). This standard is the end product of a three-year effort on the part of over 150 people, representing users, vendors, and other interested parties from around the world. It is expected that systems employing the BXF standard for communications will offer users dramatic workflow benefits, including quantifiable cost savings, and potential for easy support of new revenue streams. Efforts are underway to continue the excellent momentum around BXF with an effort to develop a Recommended Practice for BXF deployments and to start assessment of current implementations that would identify possible enhanced features that may be incorporated in the future.
