SMPTE/EBU Joint Task Force on Timing &
Synchronization

Today’s television equipment is generally synchronized using a
color-black signal, generated according to PAL or NTSC
standards. However, the system is some 50 years old, relies on
frequencies that have no relevance in the domain of digital television,
and has a number of limitations.

Similarly, SMPTE timecode is a standard that has widespread
acceptance. But, timecode is over 30 years old, and is based on the
capabilities of a linear audio track on a tape machine.Is there a time
labeling system more suited to the needs of the future?

EBU and SMPTE established a Joint Task Force to examine these issues;
to research user requirements; to seek proposed solutions from the
industry, and to evaluate proposals against user requirements. The next
meeting will be at Disney in Burbank December 5th (pre-registration
REQUIRED).  Join this important group and participate in the
definition of future solutions for our industries.  You do not need
to be able to attend the physical meetings to participate.  [Full details and
registration]
