Bran Ferren Announced as Keynote Speaker at the SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is pleased to announce that Bran Ferren, Co-Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Applied Minds, will deliver the keynote address at the SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition on Wednesday, October 24 during the conference's opening general session.
The SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition is held Oct. 24-27 in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to Ferren's appearance, this annual event features exhibits, technical workshops, tutorials and the Honors & Awards ceremony and reception.
Bran is a designer and technologist working in entertainment, product development, engineering, architecture and the sciences. He is former president of research and development, and creative technology for Walt Disney Imagineering. Prior to that, he was president and senior designer for Associates & Ferren, a company that Disney acquired in 1993.
His design career has included special visual effects, as well as lighting and sound design for many Hollywood films, Broadway shows, world's fairs, theme park attractions and concert tours. He has also designed exhibitions, special purpose vehicles, consumer products and several major architectural and interior projects.
He serves on several federally funded science, technology and management advisory boards.
As a designer and technical consultant his clients have included General Motors, IBM, Warner Communications, The Walt Disney Company, Revo Sunglasses, Strand Lighting, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave Ferren a Technical Achievement Award for his computer-controlled lightning effects system and Laser Synchro-Cue System, as well as the Scientific and Engineering Award for an advanced concept optical printer, used for special effects cinematography. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1987 for his work in the film, "Little Shop of Horrors." For his work in theatre, Bran received the New York Drama Desk, Los Angeles Critics Circle and Maharam Foundation Awards. He was the recipient of the Wally Russell Lifetime Achievement Award for lighting design, and the Kilby award for significant contributions to society.
A popular guest lecturer, Bran has addressed over 100 professional groups in the entertainment, business and scientific communities.
