The goal of the event is to have a conversation among significant industry leaders from NYC’s guilds, unions, studios, and rental facilities to discuss prospects for industry recovery as well as new safety protocols, including recommendations in The Safe Way Forward by the DGA, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, & Teamsters and the PERG Safe Return to Work Guidelines by the Production Equipment Rental Group.

EVENT DESCRIPTION: As of July 20, under Phase 4 reopening, NYC film and TV production resumes with full crews but facilities at 50% capacity. How will Covid-19 continue to impact production? Will production be the same as before? What about new safety protocols? What will the future landscape of New York area production look like? To help answer these critical questions, SMPTE-NY is hosting a live, on-line panel video discussion with Q&A.

Dejan Georgevich ASC: National Vice President, IATSE Local 600
Dejan is an award-winning Director/Cinematographer and professor of advanced cinematography at The School of Visual Arts. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers as well as the Directors Guild of America. His credits include Once in a Lifetime, Ordinary Miracles: The Photo League's New York, Mercy, Cupid, Hope & Faithand more.
Andy Shipsides: President, ARRI Rental North America
Andy oversees all camera rental operations in North America. ARRI, founded in 1917 in Munich, is a leading designer and manufacturer of camera and lighting systems for film and broadcast, with a worldwide distribution and service network. Productions shot with ARRI’s acclaimed ALEXA digital cinema camera include: Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Irishman, Joker, and Parasite.
Peter Abel: CEO & Co-Founder, AbleCine
AbelCine was founded in 1989 by Pete and his brother Rich as a New York rental house specializing in innovative technologies, initially Aaton and Super 16, later the first-generation Panasonic Varicam with 720p and variable frame rates. Today AbelCine has facilities in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles offering a range of services from rental, sales, tech, training, engineering, to financial. Pete is an associate member of the American Society of Cinematographers.
Alan Suna: Owner & CEO, Silvercup Studios
Silvercup Studios is the largest film and television production facility in New York City. The studio was the primary shooting facility for ABC's Hope & Faith, and HBO's Sex and the City and The Sopranos. Also, best known for Netflix’s The Politician, HBO’s Succession, CW’s Katy Keen and many more.
Matt Miller: President/CEO, Association of Independent Commercial Producers
Matt presides over an organization whose members account for 80 to 85 percent of all commercials in the United States. He is the spokesman for more than 350 production companies which, along with another 200 affiliated firms, comprise the AICP membership.
Mary Rae Thewlis: National Vice President, Directors Guild of America
Mary was a producer, then executive producer, of the acclaimed series The Americans on FX, which won multiple industry awards including the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama. Previously, for fifteen years, she worked as 1st assistant director, unit production manager, and producer on various iterations of Law & Order.
Joseph Reidy: 1st Vice Chair, Eastern AD/UPM Council, Co-Chair 1st AD Committee at Directors Guild of America
Joe is known for working closely with Martin Scorsese over the last 20 years and 11 projects. Other A-list directors have also chosen Reidy as their right hand, including Oliver Stone, Robert Redford and Sidney Lumet. His list of credits is remarkably long, as an assistant director, co-producer, even on-screen talent doing various bit parts, including his favorite, as a gambler caught cheating in a scene from Casino with Robert DeNiro and Don Rickles.
