2012 SMPTE Regional Seminar

Title: How to Generate and Automate Content for Multi-platform, Multi-display Distribution

Today's consumers of motion imaging content have many options when it comes to service providers and display devices. They may subscribe to on-demand services via satellite or cable operators. PCs and the Internet are now very common sources for content, smartphones and tablets have matured and become almost ubiquitous. This creates many new challenges when it comes to producing and managing content. With this in mind, the 2012 SMPTE Regional Seminar is designed to provide crucial knowledge to help participants plan, produce and manage content so it can be effectively utilized with minimal regard to the distribution platform used or the display device viewed.

What participants should expect to learn:

  • Technological differences between types and formats of various multi-platform distribution systems and display devices.
  • Technologies and processes required to generate/automate content for correct display on a variety of devices including iPad/iPhone; android tablet/phone, set-top-boxes, satellite and laptop.
  • Methodologies for effectively planning workflows and technologies to support multi-platform distribution systems and various display devices.
  • Impact of SMPTE's Interoperable Master Format (IMF) standard on content produced for multi-platform/multi-display environments.

Special thanks to the following companies for their expertise to the curriculum development process:

  • Applied Electronics
  • National Film Board of Canada
  • Miranda

Dates and locations still to be finalized. Check this page for upcoming information.

SMPTE PDA Now: Standards Webcast

Topic:  SMPTE Timed Text

Guest Speaker: Michael Dolan, Television Broadcast Technology, Inc
When: Thursday 23 February, 2012 at 18:00 UTC /10:00 Pacific/13:00 Eastern

The industry is moving to more and more Internet-delivered media. To date, closed captioning and subtitles have been delivered using proprietary methods. SMPTE developed a standard for the native encoding of captions and subtitles known as "SMPTE Timed Text". In addition, it has published and drafted Recommended Practices for the mapping of CEA-608 (analog closed captions) and CEA-708 (digital closed captions) into SMPTE Timed Text, respectively, in order to assist in the migration of television content to the Internet. The US FCC has just issued a Report and Order setting out requirements for programming and devices regarding the authoring and display of Internet-delivered captioning that references SMPTE Timed Text. The webcast will cover the technical details of these SMPTE standards and is targeted at the engineer involved in using them.

New Engineering Documents

The following SMPTE Engineering Documents were published during January 2012. Links to the documents in the SMPTE Store are noted below.

SMPTE ST 335:2012
(Revision of SMPTE 335M-2001), Metadata Element Dictionary Structure

Extract from Scope

This standard defines the structure of a dictionary of metadata elements that may be used in a range of applications such as production workflow applications, data exchange formats, and archival asset management systems.  The standard normatively defines universal identifiers, metadata element names, definitions, and standardized symbols, as well as other informative fields. These elements may be used as components in structured data models.  In addition to aiding the interoperability of data between applications, this standard also serves to distinguish similar elements through the unambiguous definitions of these elements and, when necessary, their application or conceptual context. The metadata elements defined by this standard include elements derived from both abstract semantics and application-specific elements.  Applications of individual metadata elements will vary but, when used, metadata shall conform to the definitions and formats in the metadata element dictionary.  Note: The previously published version of this document, SMPTE 335M-2001, had the title "Metadata Dictionary Structure". The title was changed to better describe the role of this document among the set of dictionary structure documents.

SMPTE ST 2003:2012, Types Dictionary Structure

Extract from Scope

This standard defines the structure of a dictionary of types for all registers defined by SMPTE ST 336. These types may be used in a range of applications such as production workflow applications, data exchange formats, and archival asset management systems.  The standard normatively defines universal identifiers, type names, definitions, and standardized symbols, as well as other normative and informative fields.  Applications of individual entries will vary, but, when used, shall conform to the definitions and formats in the types dictionary.

SMPTE RP 2052-10:2012
(Revision of SMPTE RP 2052-10:2010), Conversion from CEA-608 Data to SMPTE-TT

Extract from Scope

This recommended practice document defines the preferred method of converting from CEA-608 data streams to SMPTE-TT (as defined in SMPTE ST 2052-1). This document details how such a conversion can be made, and defines some constraints on the translation process so that the resulting SMPTE-TT file is interoperable between SMPTE-TT implementations.

Amendment 1:2012 to SMPTE RP 2052-10:2010,
Conversion from CEA-608 Data to SMPTE-TT – Amendment 1

Extract from Scope

The purpose of this amendment is to correct byte translation typographical errors.

3D Cinema and Television Technology: The First 100 Years

This compendium contains more than 50 papers published in the SMPTE Journal during the past century from 1919 to 2010. These historic SMPTE papers provide a foundation for understanding the current innovations in 3D stereoscopic areas, including acquisition, content creation, exhibition, distribution, and display technology. Edited by Michael D. Smith, Peter Ludé, and Bill Hogan, with chapter introductions by Ray Zone, the papers in this book contain a wealth of information on the transformation of 3D from its early days of experimentation to current applications in media and entertainment. This book serves as an important reference tool in any technical library.
