A Joint SMPTE Meeting with the AES Atlanta Section
Presented by Patrick Waddell, manager, standards & regulatory, Harmonic Inc.

11 June 2012
Turner Techwood Campus (Prior Security Clearance Required)
Atlanta, GA

Broadcasters and content providers alike are now painfully aware of the presence of the U.S. Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (CALM Act) of 2010. What may not be clear, however, is the impact of the Act, and the FCC Rules it spawned, on the daily operations of content providers and their "downstream" customers: the TV stations and MVPDs. Additionally, we will investigate the effects on ad creation and distribution, as well as look at the background of both the CALM Act and the ATSC Recommended Practice A/85 it mandates.

SMPTE RDD 22:2012, Film Transfer – 2048 x 1556 Image Container and Signal Interface

Extract from Scope

The intended application of this RDD is for the transfer of full frame film images to electronic media. This RDD defines an image pixel array and interface container to transport a maximum pixel array of 2048 x 1556, over a realtime serial digital interface of 1650 lines. The source image is a 4:4:4 image, transported by a dual link interface. The 2048 x 1556 source image is mapped into 2 serial Interface containers, 2 x 1536 x 778 pixels (dual channel) per link. The Y/G image samples are interleaved between the Y and C channels of link A. The Red image samples are interleaved between the Y and C channels of link B. The Blue samples are interleaved between the C channels of link A and the Y channel of link B. This RDD serial interface data structure, sampling frequencies, and synchronizing signals have a lot in common to other SMPTE defined HDTV Serial interfaces. These commonalities should allow for the use of HDTV distribution equipment currently in use to transport these images. Because of the mapping format, processing and storage of the serial interface data will be required to display the 2048 x 1556 images.

SMPTE ST 2065-3:2012, Academy Density Exchange Encoding (ADX) –
Encoding Academy Printing Density (APD) Values

Extract from Scope

This Standard defines the Academy Density Exchange Encoding (ADX) including the encoding method, the 16-bit and 10-bit component value encoding metrics, and the method for converting between the 16-bit and 10-bit component value encoding metrics.

3D Cinema and Television Technology: The First 100 Years

This compendium contains more than 50 papers published in the SMPTE Journal during the past century from 1919 to 2010. Edited by Michael D. Smith, Peter Ludé, and Bill Hogan, with chapter introductions by Ray Zone, the papers in this book contain a wealth of information on the transformation of 3D from its early days of experimentation to current applications in media and entertainment. This book serves as an important reference tool in any technical library.
