During this SMPTE PDA Now educational webcast, Mr. Devlin investigates real MXF usage—why are there so many variants? Is it really Bruce's fault? SMPTE and the Cisco Networking Academy

There is no doubt that the Motion Imaging Industry has undergone tremendous change over the past several years. The disruptive transition from traditional workflows to file-based workflows has created the need for industry technologists to fully understand essential networking concepts such as network architectures, protocols, network addressing, subnets, Ethernet and many more concepts increasingly utilized in our day-to-day work. In the past, only a few options existed to acquire this essential knowledge and these options generally were expensive and always required travel.

Today, SMPTE is helping to more easily access opportunities to learn these critical principles through its Professional Development Academy. SMPTE is now part of the Cisco Networking Academy network and, as such, now offers the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Course, Networking Fundamentals through its innovative blended virtual classroom environment. That's right, virtual classroom! There is no travel and the seven week course can be completed using your high speed Internet connected computer. Led by an expert instructor, course participants complete online lessons, complete learning assessments and actually configure simulated networks using Cisco's Packet Tracer program.

Registration for the next course will open soon! For more information please visit us at

Application of this standard includes, but is not limited to, 525-line and 625-line standard definition digital television interfaces (component and composite), high definition digital television interfaces (750 and 1125 lines), and D-Cinema interfaces that provide 8-bit or 10-bit ancillary data spaces.  Space available for ancillary data packets is defined in documents specifying connecting interfaces.  Ancillary data packet payload definitions for a specific application are specified by a SMPTE Standard, Recommended Practice, or Registered Disclosure Document, or by a document generated by another organization, a company, or an individual (an Entity). When a payload format is registered with SMPTE, an application document describing the payload format is required, and the registered ancillary data packet is identified by a registered data identification word.
