The Business of Entertainment V (co-produced by SMPTE)
Saturday, 22 October 2011
This event will include a presentation titled, "A Technology Update from the Front Lines of Change" by SMPTE Past Governor Rick Dean, THX, who will cover the fundamentals and opportunities of technological advances in an industry where technology can be both friend... and foe. This presentation is co-sponsored by SMPTE.
In addition, the event will feature Peter Schneider, Randy Greenberg, and Chris Philip. Schneider was chairman of the Walt Disney Studios and president of Feature Animation during the Lion King, Aladdin, Mermaid etc. He is also the Tony award-winning producer of The Lion King on Broadway. Schneider will guide the audience through the various steps that have most often led to artistic success, including: breaking the rules, marrying the experimental with the proven, and unleashing through strategic thinking the "happy accidents" that are at the heart of the creative process. Greenberg is executive producer of Cowboys and Aliens among other significant accomplishments and will cover the step-by-step process a producer should undertake regardless of the project's budget. Philip, president of Electus-Engine Distribution, will guide attendees through the treacherous tides of global media sales.

New Engineering Documents
The following SMPTE Engineering Documents were published during August 2011. Links to the documents in the SMPTE Store are noted below.
SMPTE ST 292-2:2011, Dual 1.5 Gb/s Serial Digital Interface for Stereoscopic Image Transport
Extract from Scope
This standard defines a means of transporting stereoscopic images (Left eye and Right eye images) using an interface consisting of two streams based on the SMPTE ST 292-1 data structure. The Left eye images are carried on one stream of the interface and the Right eye images are carried on the other stream. The stereoscopic image formats to be transported using this standard are the 4:2:2/10-bit image formats defined by SMPTE ST 274, SMPTE ST 2048-2 and SMPTE ST 296, which can be transported by a single SMPTE ST 292-1 serial interface. Audio and other associated ancillary data may also be transported. This standard also defines a payload identifier.
SMPTE ST 2053:2011, Media Package for Storage, Distribution and Playback of Multimedia File Sets and Internet Resources
Extract from Scope
This document describes the physical packaging format of the SMPTE Media Package. This specification is derived from the ISO 29500-2 specification for Open Packaging Conventions. The SMPTE Media Package Format may combine multiple media files, metadata files, playback applications, and other files, along with an XML Table of Contents, in a single ZIP file that can be stored and distributed as a single object using simple file transfer protocols such as HTTP:. Systems that have ZIP file readers may read or extract or add individual files in a Media Package. The Table of Contents and related XML files enable a media player to select appropriate media files, tracks, DRM licenses, presentation applications, and other media-specific constructs for playback, download, streaming, or updating. A reader that fully supports Open Packaging Conventions can utilize additional functionality, such as advanced file properties and digital signatures.
SMPTE ST 2047-4:2011, Carriage of Level 65 VC-2 Compressed Video Over the SDTV SDI
Extract from Scope
This standard defines the method of mapping VC-2 data onto an SDTV SDI link operating at 270Mbps, based upon the data structures defined in SMPTE ST 259 and ITU-R BT 656 to transport the compressed HD video formats listed in Table 1. The compressed HD video formats supported by this standard are those supported by the low delay profile of VC-2 at level 65. These formats are 1080I at 50 or 60/1.001 fields/s (i.e., SMPTE ST 274 systems 5 and 6), and 720P at 50 or 60/1.001 frames/s (i.e., SMPTE ST 296 systems 2 and 3). Additionally VC-2 level 65 supports the compression of SMPTE ST 274 systems 5 and 6 in which the horizontal sample rate has been reduced to 1440 pixels. The SDTV SDI link defined herein supports the carriage of embedded audio, ancillary data and payload identification. A signal coded in accordance with this standard incorporates a noisy but recognizable picture that can be viewed using a standard SMPTE ST 259 / ITU-R BT 656 video monitor.
SMPTE RP 2047-3:2011, VC-2 Level 65 Compression of High Definition Video Sources for Use with a Standard Definition Infrastructure
Extract from Scope
This recommended practice defines constraints on the VC-2 video compression specification such that 10-bit high definition video signals may be compressed to only occupy the bit rate of 8-bit standard definition signals. Specifically, it defines constraints for compressing interlaced source video having 1920 or 1440 pixels/line by 1080 lines/frame at 25 or 30/1.001 frames/s, or progressive source video having 1280 pixels/line by 720 lines/frame at 50 or 60/1.001 frames/s, using 4:2:2 sampling in all cases. This document defines a VC-2 bit-stream for video compressed according to this practice. It also defines an application specific level for VC-2 compression.
This compendium contains over 50 papers published in the SMPTE Journal during the past century from 1919 to 2010. These historic SMPTE papers provide a foundation for understanding the current innovations in 3D stereoscopic areas, including acquisition, content creation, exhibition, distribution, and display technology. Edited by Michael D. Smith, Peter Ludé, and Bill Hogan, the papers in this book contain a wealth of information on the transformation of 3D from its early days of experimentation to current applications in media and entertainment. This book will serves as an important reference tool in any technical library.

When was the Last Time You Reviewed Your Life Insurance Needs?
Life Insurance is not something you buy once and forget about. Major life events such as getting married, having a child, sending your children to college and planning for retirement often require a reassessment of your life insurance needs.
The SMPTE 10-Year Level Term Life Insurance Plan was designed with those needs in mind. You can apply for up to $1,000,000 of coverage at competitive group rates—and lock in those rates for the next ten years.* Many experts recommend that you have as much as ten times your annual income in life insurance protection. The benefits your loved ones receive may help them pay off mortgages, replace lost income if you are not there to provide for your family and pay expenses incurred at the time of death.
For more information about the SMPTE 10-Year Level Term Life Insurance Plan Click Here.
*The initial premium may not change for the first 10 years; however the insurance company reserves the right to change the premium rates but only if rates are changed for all insureds under the group policy and with 60 days written notice.
