At last September’s Hollywood section SMPTE meeting, in front of a good interactive group, we discussed part one of David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” acquisition workflow and some of the differences learned from Zodiac and updated on Benjamin Button.

For the September 25th meeting we will once again bring together a group of the Buttons workflow team to discuss part two of the project, including the showing of clips from the movie which is due for release on December 25th.

The presentation will open with a clip from the 1938 Technicolor feature The Goldwyn Follies, using a new print made from the 70 year old 3-strip camera negatives.

The schedule includes, once again, Peter Mavromates, Steve Roach, Angus Wall and with Mark Chiolis moderating the discussion.  Also planning to join the panel will be cinematographer Claudio Miranda and VFX Specialist Craig Barron.

Mark Chiolis

Senior Director Business Unit Marketing for Thomson Grass Valley.  Previous to working in the marketing and sales divisions for Thomson Grass Valley, Mark has spent over 15 years on the production side of the business shooting and directing commercials and programs for regional television and DVD distribution.

Peter Mavromates

Peter has worked in Hollywood for over 20 years in many areas of the production business, including Producer, Production Manager, Transportation Manager and of course Production Assistant.  For the last 10 years most of his focus has been in the area of Post Production Supervisor and he has worked on films such as:  The Game, Hurlyburly, Fight Club, One Night at McCool’s, Panic Room, Kill Bill Volumes one and two, Zodiac and is currently working on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. 

Stephen Roach

Vice President.  Co-founder S.two Corp., the industry leader in digital cinematography workflow.  Steve has 30 years experience in film and video operating, engineering, technical marketing, product management, and film and video equipment distribution.  Steve has become one of the industry’s leading experts on adapting new digital technologies to film and video production.  Previous positions include director of technology for Sierra Design Labs, product manager for daVinci Systems, and president of AfterGlow, a multi-national video equipment distribution and engineering company. 

Angus Wall

Founder of rock paper scissors, and a52, interdependent editing and effects/design companies and most recently has added “DataLab” to that group and moved all of the groups to Santa Monica.

Angus has edited numerous award winning commercials and music videos, with directors such as:

David Fincher, Errol Morris, Spike Jonze, Gus van Sant, Tim Burton, John Woo, William Friedken, Michael Bay, Joe Pytka, Lance Acord, Tony and Jake Scott.

He began his movie career with Fincher, cutting the titles to Se7en and serving as editorial consultant on Fight Club.  He was nominated for, and won an Emmy for the main title on HBO’s Carnivale in 2004.  Angus also edited Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in addition to running his companies.

Claudio Miranda

Cinematographer and inventive lighting guru Claudio Miranda is about to see the release of his latest feature, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, directed by David Fincher.

Miranda has known Fincher since 1985. From his first jobs as a stage manager, electrician and best boy, he moved on to gaff Fincher’s The Game, followed by watershed feature Fight Club in 1999. At the production wrap party for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Miranda earned the (tongue-in-cheek) “Longevity Award” for his enduring relationship with the director. He also gaffed Tony Scott’s Crimson Tide, The Fan and Enemy of the State.

Miranda has developed a look influenced more by the natural world than conventionally cinematic stylizations. He is influenced by the imperfections appearing within a composition, often choosing to light less obvious focal points within the frame.

Jan A. Yarbrough

Technical Director, Motion Picture Imaging
Warner Bros.

Jan A. Yarbrough is Technical Director and Senior DI Colorist Motion Picture Imaging for Warner Bros.  located in the center of the Warner Bros. Studio Lot.  Mr. Yarbrough oversees dailies transfer, video editing, audio laydown/layback, video mastering, digital cinema mastering, digital intermediates and digital restoration.  As Technical Director and Senior DI Colorist, Mr. Yarbrough is responsible for implementing and maintaining the “Look” and “Vision” of the filmmakers on all deliverables going through the facility.  He is instrumental in the operation and growth of the facility. 

Mr. Yarbrough holds a B.A. in Cinema Production from the University of Southern California.  He is a member of The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, BKSTS, Audio Engineering Society, and the American Society of Cinematographers.

Patrick Cooper

Patrick Cooper has become one of the top imaging specialists at Lowry Digital over the last eight years. His role requires the unique combination of a sensitivity to the traditional film aesthetic and a command of the technical aspects of image processing. Patrick has managed the end-to-end image processing or restoration of more than 40 feature length films. Some of the more notable image processing projects include Zodiac, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and THX-1138. Notable restorations include Return of the Jedi, Sunset Boulevard, Drums Along the Mohawk, and many of the James Bond films, including Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and You Only Live Twice.
