SMPTE Hollywood Section Meeting September 28, 2017

The meeting on September 28, 2017 was held at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, California.

The meeting explored ATSC 3.0, the next-generation digital-broadcast standard, and was a combined event with the Audio Engineering Society's Los Angeles Section and the Society of Television Engineers. Approximately 151 guests were present. 

Dr. Richard Chernock ScD., chair of the Advanced Technology Systems Committee (ATSC) Technology Group 3 (TG3), discussed the group’s progress toward finalizing ATSC 3.0 and how the new standard differs from ATSC 1.0, which currently governs digital broadcasts.  He was made available under the auspices of the IEEE Broadcast Television Society Distinguished Lecturers Program.

Dr. Chernock spoke about the Advanced Television Systems Committee mission. He gave the audience an overview of ATSC 3.0 by explaining how the ATSC 1.0 (A/53) digital TV broadcasting standard was revolutionary in 1995, but 20 years later broadcast technologies and consumer viewing habits have radically changed the broadcast landscape.  The ATSC 3.0 Next Generation Broadcast Standard is a response to these changes while designed to incorporate new technologies as they become available.   ATSC 3.0 is not backward compatible with ATSC 1.0 (8VSB/MPEG2/HD/AC3);  thus there is a high bar that mandates the inclusion of significant technology improvements

ATSC 3.0 is consumer driven. The goals of ATSC 3.0 is to first, improve the television viewing experience. Second, to add value to the broadcaster’s service platform. Third, to address changing consumer behavior and preferences. As a result, ATSC 3.0, the next generation of broadcast television, will:

Have significantly higher data capacity.
Offer flexible spectrum use.
Have  higher physical layer robustness.
Offer future extensibility and mobile / handheld support.
Offer hybrid broadcast + broadband delivery.
Have advanced A / V compression that support  immersive audio and UHD video with full 10bit depth, HDR and wide color gamut.
Offer Interactivity and personalization.
Offer potentially new business models and the ability to adopt new technologies.

Dr. Chernock updated the audience on the status of the ATSC 3.0 standards committees, described the South Korean Launch of ATSC 3.0 this past May, in readiness for the 2018 Korean Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

SMPTE Hollywood Section Meeting July 25, 2017

The meeting held on July 25, 2017, titled "Revisit Classic Movie Sound", was held at the AMPAS Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, California.

Approximately 140 members/guests were present.

Hollywood SMPTE Section Chairman Jim DeFilippis welcomed the members and guests and opened the meeting talking about the benefits of joining SMPTE. Jim also talked about future meetings. Jim introduced SMPTE Life Fellow, Dick May who produced and hosted the meeting.

The meeting included a live performance by Joe Rinaudo, founder of the Silent Cinema Society, on an American Fotoplayer (provided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). The Fotoplayer is a type of player piano used in movie theaters during the silent era to provide sound effects and music.

Motion picture archivist Bob Heiber delivered a presentation on restoring magnetic soundtracks from the 1950s. He also screened sequences from 70mm Todd-AO and Cinemascope 55 productions, including Oklahoma and The King and I. “Movie sound has undergone an incredible evolution since the early days of cinema,” said Jim DeFilippis, chair of the SMPTE Hollywood Section. “Our July meeting provided a wonderful opportunity to experience what movies sounded like before the sound era, as well as when widescreen and stereophonic sound first hit theaters.”

AR- Augmented Reality- is about immersion. Folks working in AR and XR (mixed reality) are working on new, interesting ways to keep us grounded in reality while giving us an enhanced version of the world. Now, with the help of supercomputers and mobile devices with artificial intelligence hardware, we are able to see differently.   

Presenters will give us an overview of the technology and the landscape, insights into the business opportunities and tools you will need to participate in this new communications media.

Possibilities abound. For instance, augmented commerce is the buying and selling of goods online using augmented reality to let consumers visualize products in the real-world environment ahead of purchase.

Data Drives Production Decisions

Data - and lots of it- is influencing decision-making in TV and film production in a very big way.

Decisions on how projects are green-lit, created, produced, distributed and marketed are affected by the data that’s being collected during production, on social media, streaming services, mobile devices, email and web-based communications. How we consume content is evolving and opening the door to data-rich models that claim to predict what we will watch, and how we will watch it, in the future.

Everything in a digital environment is track-able. What we ultimately do with that information is yet another decision. We invite you to join our panelists for a discussion, led by Bernie Laramie, on how big data and analytics are affecting you.

Bernie Laramie has been a Producer in Los Angeles for more than 25 years. He is best known for his work on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” as well as such series as “Shark”, “Threat Matrix”, “Profiler”, “Dark Skies” and “Max Headroom”, as well as on the IMAX 3D production of James Cameron’s “Aliens of the Deep”, and “The Last Mysteries of the Titanic”, a 17 camera live broadcast from the sunken vessel. Bernie taught Post Production for Film and Television at UCLA Extension for more than 15 years and has been a guest lecturer at USC, Cal Arts, and Art Center. He has authored a textbook for Allyn & Bacon on “Creative Post Production”. He is a member of The Producer’s Guild, The Director’s Guild, and The Editor’s Guild.

Challenge The Experts About Data Centers

If you work in Hollywood creating content for TV, movies or Internet, you have likely been barraged by advertising, articles and sales people extolling the virtues of using data centers and the cloud for production and post-production.

You’re skeptical…no way will you upload your sensitive content to a third party. 

What about reliability and security?  What about the cost of migration and the pain of transitioning to a data center model?

Considering the cost to maintain your machine room and private data storage, as well as trying to keep up with all the new technologies (4k, HDR, immersive audio), should you consider migrating to a data center/cloud given the cost savings and ease of reconfiguration possibilities? Should you be leveraging COTS hardware and software?

Today, Paul is a Lead Global Solutions Architect at Equinix focused on helping customers create a network and data center strategy that supports workloads taking advantage of cloud utility. Paul has a BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Cisco CCIE, and MBA. 

Chris James, DCIM Pro

An innovative consultant with a 25 plus year track record in Data Center Technologies. Chris has consulted with numerous Fortune 1000 companies as well as SMBs, Post and Broadcast organizations to help navigate the complex design and decision making process regarding best DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) practices.  

Current Role is Principle Director of DCIMPro (Tenzing Corp). 


Gretchen Buck, Systems Engineer, Cisco

Gretchen Buck is a Cisco Systems Engineer dedicated to Media accounts. Her responsibilities include helping content and service providers adopt new and innovative technologies to drive preparedness for next-generation content creation and delivery. Prior to 5 years at Cisco Gretchen earned a BS/MS of Engineering from the University of Southern California. She is still involved with her alma mater by providing mentorship with a particular focus around encouraging female students to pursue careers in STEM and Media Tech.


Scott Adametz - Sr. Manager, Technology Operations at the NFL

Scott Adametz has spent a decade in technical roles engineering new infrastructure solutions for media and broadcasting organizations. He was instrumental in launching Pac-12 Networks in San Francisco and Big Ten Network in Chicago. He is a two-time Emmy nominee for technical achievement in 2014 & 2015 for advancements in IP Production technology and further recognized internationally with an IBC Innovation Award.


Joachim Zell- EFilm

Joachim Zell currently serves as VP of Technology at EFILM/Deluxe, where he designs and monitors production workflows from onset production to the movie release. Previously he was VP of Advanced Technology at Technicolor Thomson in Burbank and before that he was Marketing Manager Americas at Grass Valley Thomson. During his time in London Joachim worked as Product Manager digital film systems for Pandora Int. He served on the ASC Technology committee that defined the ASC CDL standard and joined the Academy ACES discussion forum. Joachim holds a Master’s Degree in Film and Television Engineering and was co-writer on 4x imaging processing patents.

Tuesday, January 31, 2017 The AES LA/SMPTE Hollywood Section Meeting Showcases The  5.1 Sound For The Netflix Hit Series “Stranger Things”

Dialog, music and sound effects artfully blend in this spooky sci-fi drama that's been renewed for a second season.

The experts from the TV series Stranger Things will share how they created the unique 5.1-channel soundtrack, including the music that is key to the show’s look and feel and discuss their inspiration gained from films like Alien, The Thing, and Predator. 

The team is headed up by supervising sound editor Brad North, who works closely with sound designer Craig Henighan, sound-effects editor Jordan Wilby and music editor David Klotz, the re-recording crew, comprising Joe Barnett handing dialog and music, and Adam North handling sound effects.

Part sci-fi, part horror and part drama, this Netflix series pays homage to the eighties and young people coming of age.
