The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®), the organization whose standards work has supported a century of technological advances in entertainment technology, today announced that its November meeting will focus on cyber-security.
Hollywood, today, faces growing and increasingly complex security threats. “New digital workflows and the expanding use of cloud-based storage, mobile devices and social media have changed the way entertainment industry companies conduct business, but they have also made them more vulnerable to cyber-attack, whether for financial gain or political motivations,” said Marty Meyer, chair of the SMPTE Hollywood Section. “It is imperative for engineers to proactively develop and implement effective security strategies.”
“Hacking Hollywood: How Safe Is Your Data?” will feature a panel discussion with experts from law enforcement and private industry. They will discuss the phenomenon of cyber-crime and explain how companies can understand the risk and stay safe. They will also provide an overview of cybersecurity-related educational, certification and employment opportunities available to engineers. The event is sponsored by HP Enterprise Services and Verizon Digital Media Services.
Panelists will include:
Sergeant Peter Hish, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Fraud & Cyber Crime Bureau. Sergeant Hish manages the department’s cyber-crime training center and community cyber-crime prevention efforts.
Lieutenant Tony Leon, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Fraud & Cyber Crime Bureau. Lieutenant Leon has managed the department’s data network and deployed several department-wide, mission-critical IT projects.
Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) Michael Sohn, FBI, Los Angeles Field Division. Agent Sohn leads a division responsible for investigating computer and high-technology crimes.
Philip A. Jones, Security & Privacy Business Leader, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services. Jones is a senior advisor in risk-based cyber-security and privacy programs.
Detective Andrew Kleinick, Los Angeles Police Department, Cyber Crimes. Detective Kleinick is the officer-in-charge of LAPD's Cyber Crimes Unit, responsible for digital forensics and cyber-crime investigations.
Steve Wong, Director of Business Development Media & Entertainment Group, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Wong media and entertainment internet infrastructure expert and recipient of a 2007 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development for the Teranex Video Computer.

The smart phone. It’s an integral part of our eco-system and it’s becoming a viable device for creating content. Forget big budgets and big iron – this is no budget, in your pocket tech.
Ideally suited for social media and YouTube offerings, Phoneography (yes, a new word) is becoming a genuine “thing”.
We’re going to explore the technology and third party support gear, the effect on our work, and who’s using smart phones to create content. You may be surprised to learn what ABC sitcom has incorporated a smart phone into their production.
Our presenters include:
Modern Family picture editor Tony Ocena who will discuss the use of smartphones and pads in their production of ABC’s Modern Family Episode “Connection Lost”. Tony will discuss workflow, production and color correction.
Vadym Chalenko, CEO, Beastgrip, Chicago, IL https://beastgrip.com will speak to the capabilities of the platform and his success funding his venture on Kickstarter.
Sven Dreesbach, Producer/ Director and Sean Lawrence, VP Business Development at Beastgrip will explore the challenges of creating professional media on smart phones.
OTT: Side Effects of OTT TV

Hosted by SMPTE Section Manager and Director of Telco & Media for Siemens, Steve Wong, a panel of experts from content production, distribution and OTT technology discussed the changes OTT is bringing to media production, consumption and delivery.
SMPTE is synonymous with standards, and without standards for digital media there will be consequences. Broadcast television, originally defined as “being in the public interest, convenience and necessity”, serves the homes of disabled (hearing and visually challenged) and non-English speaking viewers who depend on third party devices that enable them to watch and understand televised programs. When we think about OTT we need to think about accessibility for everyone. Since there is no governing body for the Internet, standardization will be that much more important to alleviate the continued creation of proprietary technologies.
Content security, branding across platforms, cloud services, front end and back end technologies, use of meta data, evolving business models and the economic implications of over the top broadcasts are still being explored.
The OTT speakers panel included John Griffin, VP Digital Entertainment at Dolby Labs, Claudio Ludovisi, SVP Marketing and Digital Operational Strategy, NBC Entertainment, Jeff Gilbert, CE Verizon Digital Media Services, Steve Cronan, CEO 5th Kind, Tom Munro, CEO Verimatrix, Christopher Louvion, CEO M-GO and Marty Schindler, CEO The Shindler Perspective.
An increasing concern for content creators is tracking the multiple versions and metadata as their content migrates to services and platforms that have different levels of authority that broadcast to end users, broadcast traffic systems and databases.
There are many topologies and workflows associated with OTT, and there is a range of implications for engineers. For some, OTT evokes the coupling of applications embedded in smart TV’s or set -top boxes with a content origination strategy. For others, it’s working closely with CDN’s to ensure quality of service across IP networks.
The benefit of OTT to consumers is obvious. The field is developing quickly as use of mobile, second screen devices grows and we experience the promise of increasingly intelligent consumer electronics to enable “anytime, anywhere” viewing of the magical experience that is TV.

Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Clip
Winner of 3 Academy Awards (Art Direction, Original Score and Film Editing) "The Adventures of Robin Hood" is a delightful tale of high adventure, a tale of action and colorful pageantry, a great film for all the family..
The Sound Man (1950)
This short on movie sound men starts with a short history of sound in the movies. We then see how the different jobs in the sound department contribute to the finished film. They start with the technicians, who record the original sounds, and end with the re-recording mixer who takes several different tracks and blends them into a single soundtrack.
Dinner for Eight (1934) "Dinner for Eight" the second experimental film of any kind made using the Technicolor process, done in 1934 as a test and shown in theatres by Edison as an advertisement for electric appliances. The cinematographer is Ray Rennahan, the most important cinematographer working with the early Technicolor three-strip process (check IMDB.com for his credits). He later won two Oscars for cinematography ("Gone with the Wind" and "Blood and Sand
Service With a Smile (1934)This was the first of two three-strip Technicolor live-action shorts, completed and released by WB four months before La Cucaracha (1934), which is often identified as the first one. Good Morning, Eve! (1934) was the second one.
Sun Valley Serenade (1941): clip dance sequence “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”
We will get to see one clip from this musical (1941) featuring Glenn Miller Orchestra and a dance sequence with the Nicolas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge

2012 Meeting Reports

The Hollywood Section’s meeting on February 22, 2012 was a visit to the Los Angeles Broadcast Center of Direct TV.
DIRECTV’s 200,000 sq. ft., LA Broadcast Center at 12800 Culver Blvd., LA (near Marina del Rey), is one of the world’s most technologically sophisticated broadcast facilities.. This facility is responsible for DIRECTV’s satellite broadcast of CONUS standard definition signals as well as CONUS HD signals to nearly 20 million US subscribers and is a key contributor in feeding additional content to 11 million customers in Latin America. In addition to satellite broadcasting the Los Angeles Broadcast Center is responsible for unique television production, mobile and internet streaming and DIRECTV’s video on demand.
Chris Homer (DIRECTV’s VP West Coast Operations) and his staff made sure our visit was both enjoyable and highly informative:
6:30 to 7:30 PM was mixer in the main entrance lobby, with an elegant, gourmet buffet, attended by about 60 members. At 7:30 PM there was a Welcome by Chris Homer and introduction of his two other tour leaders. Our attendees were divided into three groups. The first group started its tour at 7:40, followed by the other two groups at 5:00 minute intervals.
Each tour group covered essentially the same route through the giant main facility and the huge satellite antenna farm, just behind. There were many stops where Chris and his two other tour leaders stopped to detail what we were seeing, much of it unique to DIRECTV and not for publication. Awesome! is the best word to describe this tour. One of our attendees carried a pedometer, the tour covered over a mile and a half.

On January 25th the Hollywood section of hosted our first meeting of the year. It took place at Roush Media, a digital intermediate
post house in Burbank California. Attendance was an unusually large approximately 130 people.
The event was hosted by THX, Barco, Advantage Video Systems and Image Systems and was broken up into three small events.
When people arrived they were greeted to elegant food such as stuffed mushrooms, Cornish game hen, Vegan polenta sandwiches
and a mushroom and salad bar. The first part of the meeting was a continuous networking gathering where friends and colleagues
could talk over the issues of the industry and our guests and students met industry leaders to help them in their career.
The second part was a presentation from THX and Barco on 11.1 theater systems and the third was a focus panel on DI, color
strategies and issues facing our industry. Each of the presentations were repeated twice to give people a chance to continue to
network and see all the presentations. At the beginning of each of the presentations Jeffrey Stansfield, who is the current secretary/treasurer
introduced the speakers and gave a brief presentation on the benefits of membership and some of our upcoming events.
The 11.1 presentation was given by Rick Dean who is the Senior Vice President of THX and has been with them since 1999.
Rick brought many years of post production and production experience as the lead in many of the Star Wars trilogy movies as
well as being a former governor of SMPTE. Rick is also a chair for the 3D@Home Consortium which represents Consumer Electronics Manufacturers,
Studios, Games Developers and 3D Technology providers to help drive standards for enabling the 3D market in the consumer’s home
and commercial applications. In the presentation he talked about the history of THX and how they got from their beginnings to introducing
this immersive sound system called the Auro 3D 11.1. Rick played a short informational video explaining the benefits of the Auro 3D
sound system and how it works. He had slide presentations on how to break down 11.1 mix to a 7.1 and then back up to the 11.1
. During the presentation we were treated to interviews from the mix team at Skywalker Sound for the feature film “Red Tails”.
We also saw a breathtaking clip from the movie. There were also interviews with Wilfried Van Baelen, CEO of Auro 3D Technologies
and the inventor of Auro 3D, and Brian Claypool, VP Business Development at Barco. The audience learned how 30 years of experience
enables companies like THX and Barco to collaborate and bring us an impressive theatrical experience. Many of the attendees were
interested enough to commit to make a trip out to the Regal Theater in Calabasas to hear the Auro 3D system in a theatrical setting.

The Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers held its Second Annual Holiday Reception on December 13th from 6:30 to 9 PM for an evening of light appetizers, drinks and great company. Canon generously agreed to host the event at their new Canon Hollywood Professional Technology and Support Center. Technicolor provided the parking services for the event.
