Over the course of many decades, the television industry has tried various techniques to
enable audience interaction with television programming. Using the limited real estate of the
TV screen always presented a problem to system and content developers. A second display
screen in the form of a smart phone, tablet or laptop opens the door to real-time interaction
and simultaneous complementary content without commandeering the principal TV display or
leading the viewer away from the program. Equally important, these devices have Internet
connectivity to support the interactive experience for all distribution platforms including one-way terrestrial broadcasting and satellite. Learn how Canadian broadcasters are integrating
their television and Internet assets to create a hybrid experience of television, Internet and
social media.
