The prevalence of portable solid state recorders has come at the disappearance of the ubiquitous VTR for acquisition. Tape and all of its maintenance problems are going away, in favour of solid state media. Last March, the earthquake and tsunami in Sendai, Japan caused a disruption in production of videotape at the start of the production season. The price doubled overnight, as the tape stock shortage became clearer. This accelerated the move away from tape acquisition towards solid state media. Tonight, we will look at some of these recording devices, to learn about what’s available, how they work, & their production workflows.

Brian Young, Product Manager for Video & Production Technologies at Vistek. Brian will present devices from some of the many companies that they represent, and discuss the application of these solid state recorders in program production and their technologies.

Dan Keaton, Director of Sales and Marketing for Convergent Design. Dan will present the technology behind the Gemini 4:4:4 digital recorders, the advantages of recording ARRIRAW and discuss how this unit is used in high-end productions.

Daine Pearson, East Coast Sales Manager for Cinedeck. Daine will present the Cinedeck EX and RX uncompressed recorders, and discuss each models production applications.

Nasser Mroueh, Broadcast Sales Representative for Cinequip White. Nasser will present the PIX240 from Sound Devices, and discuss the areas in which this digital recorder is used. He will also bring an end user with his equipment, to share his experiences using his camera connected to a Ki Pro Mini recorder, on set and in post.

The SMPTE Board of Managers will meet in Room RCC-102 starting at 4:45 PM.

Pizza & Pop Dinner will be provided at 6:30pm, there is no break between presentations
