Subtitles have been an essential part of TV transmissions for many years – some using specifications dating from the 1970 and 1980s

Visit Screen Subtitling for a roundup of recent standardisation developments by the EBU group
working on timed text and subtitling and find out how subtitling continues to be
an essential part of content delivery both for tradition broadcast and web based content.

With SMPTE Timed Text ST 2052-1 being Safe harbor for delivery of Web material in the USA ,
and with DVB just starting looking at how to Subtitle  UHD transmissions (replacing EN 300-743 from 1990s)  
OFCOM looking at the timing of Real-time subtitles- solution that Screen has been doing
with Ericsson ATOS and BBC R&D to improve the timing through the DVB channel
– there is a lot happening currently – with Screen taking a leading role

Speaker 

John Birch has been working as a business and technical specialist in subtitling solutions for almost 15 years
He travels extensively, visiting subtitlers, broadcasters, suppliers and broadcast exhibitions in his role
as Strategic Partnerships Manager for Screen Systems;   manufacturer of software and hardware
products for subtitling.
John is also a member of several standards organisations and committees that are active
in the subtitling arena, including SMPTE, the EBU and the W3C.
