Object audio - the way to immersive sound
Object-based audio systems are starting to appear in television broadcast standards,
though the challenges and opportunities of these are only starting to become apparent.
Learn about and hear how objects enable teh immersive exspieience - and meet the staff
and Students at Surrey Univeristy and Stag.tv
Reflecting on work in the EPSRC funded S3A project we will cover the basics of object-based audio,
and discuss some of the difficulties that still need to be resolved such as the integration
of reverberation into an object-based stream. We will also give an overview of some of
the opportunities for personalisation and adaptation offered by object-based audio,
from the typical examples of being able to switch commentary versions, to more advanced methods
to adjust intelligibility and render to consumer devices
The evening will conclude with demonstrations of some of the work conducted so far.
. The 5-year S3A project (http://www.s3a-spatialaudio.org) funded
by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and involving the Universities
of Surrey, Salford, and Southampton, as well as BBC Research and Development,
is looking into the technical and perceptual aspects of object-based audio.
