The Section Meeting on September 15, 2005 was held in the auditorium of Professional Products, Inc. in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Approximately 25 members and guests received an excellent presentation by Laurence J. Thorpe, National Marketing Executive, Broadcast and Communications Division of Canon, entitled "Challenges in HDTV Studio Lens Design".
Mr. Thorpe spoke on the complexities of HD lenses design when used with a 2/3" image sensor. He said that the design of lenses is the science of optimization and described how four or five months of computer modeling takes place before a first optical sample is created. Producing the proper Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is the key to accurate scene reproduction, with resolution measured in Lp/mm. He continued to explain the other factors associated with the dynamics of modern zoom lenses technology, as the lens is exercised throughout it zoom range.
The presentation, which lasted about an hour, was followed by questions and answers. Canon provided a hot buffet and refreshments during the social hour before the formal meeting. The DC Section would like to thank Mr. Thorpe and Canon for a job well done and Professional Products for their hospitality.
