Media in the Cloud: Ontology Guide

IP Monitoring and Measurement

The broadcast industry’s ongoing transition to internet protocol (IP)-based transport for video, audio, and data is being enabled by the development of standards such as SMPTE ST 2022-6 and the SMPTE ST 2110 Professional Media Over Managed IP Networks standards suite. These standards provide the interconnection framework for an all-IP infrastructure within a facility.

As they embrace IP infrastructure and the new standards created for IP-based operations and workflow, broadcast engineers need to understand the new technology and techniques essential to monitoring signals on an IP network. In this webcast, Mike Waidson will examine the basic structure of the packets for ST 2022-6 and the emerging ST 2110 suite, discuss the impact of latency and how variable delay across the network introduces jitter at the receiver, and outline the use of measurement and monitoring to ensure an error-free network for transmission of high bit rate media.

Educated in England he received a B.Sc. Hons. in Communications Engineering from the University of Kent at Canterbury. Initially, Waidson worked in consumer electronics for a manufacturer of consumer television sets in the digital video department working on advanced television receiver design. He moved on to various broadcast equipment manufacturers. At Tektronix, as an Application Engineer for the last twenty years within the Product Line, Waidson has provided support on the video measurement products from analog to digital to HD and now IP.
