SMPTE Technology Webcast: Two Blockchain Case Studies for M&E
Before it was well understood, blockchain was touted as a revolutionary technology that would change the world. Outside of cryptocurrency, blockchain has proven to be more of a valuable set of tools and techniques for very specific use cases. This webcast will examine two such use cases as they apply to Media & Entertainment; smart contracts and secure high-performance content distribution.
Michelle Munson is the co-founder and CEO of Eluvio, a software company based in Berkeley, CA pioneering new technologies for a content-centric Internet. Eluvio's Content Fabric is an open, high performance software network for management and distribution of large form content (video) in ways never before possible, realizing quality, efficiency, provability, personalization and monetization. Michelle previously founded Aspera in 2004 and led the company as CEO until May 2017, including through acquisition by IBM in 2014. She created the Aspera FASP™ transport technology, an Emmy-award winning technology used in the digital media supply chain for high-speed low cost secure digital content transport, replacing satellite and traditional tape based delivery technologies.
Michelle holds several patents and is a frequent speaker in the areas of content networking, machine learning, block chain and cloud infrastructure. She is the recipient of the 2019 David Sarnoff Medal for technology innovation with lasting impact in film and television, the 2016 Charles Swartz awardee (also won by Ray Dolby, the founder of Dolby Technologies) and is a SMPTE Fellow. In 2016 she was named the IABM Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and TV NewsCheck Woman of the Year, and she was named one of the Most Influential Women in Business by the SF Business Times in 2017. She also serves on the Board of Avid Corporation.
She was the 2019 Kansas State University College of Arts and Sciences Commencement Speaker and the 2006 Alumnus of the Year for the College of Engineering. She holds dual B.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Kansas State University, was a Goldwater Scholar for achievement in Science and Mathematics, and later she was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University where she received a postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science.
With a career spanning from pre-Internet days, Marc Zorn has been involved with information security as a well-recognized leader. His participation with various consortia has helped to lay the groundwork for international groups such as FIRST, SANS, and IEEE and establish standards including ISO 17799, 27000, HIPAA, and GIAC.
More recently, Marc has held key security positions in M&E primarily consulting with production companies, studios, post-production houses, and exhibitors to address protection of multimedia content through the transition from physical film to cloud-based workflows. Marc works extensively with SMPTE, HPA, ASC, MPA, CDSA and others to create appropriate security technologies and standards for the industry."

Seth Levenson has been involved in Media and Entertainment for over 30 years, and has been at the forefront of technology and entertainment. After earning his stripes in the fires of TV production at DIC Entertainment and as Group Director for Information Technology at ABC Television Network, Seth started 3 legged dog, inc. in 2001. Since then, 3 legged dog, inc. has developed software and provided consulting services to Media & Entertainment companies around the world. Specializing in digital asset management, digital distribution, digital workflow, metadata and nomenclature, and system integration and services, Mr. Levenson has presented at many conferences and meetings. Seth joined the ETC in October 2017 to bring thought leadership to cloud computing, blockchain and integration technologies. Seth lives in Calabasas, CA with his son, and, of course, his dog.
Randy Zhang, PhD and CCIE #5659 (Emeritus), is a Principal Architect at Cisco Systems. Randy is a well-recognized industry expert and an author of two books, one of which is in its 4th printing and has been translated into a foreign language. He also published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and industry magazines and is a frequent speaker in industry conferences. Randy received one US patent and is an author of 6 pending patents.
