Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. Recently at SMPTE:

SMPTE Detroit held an event on virtual production experiences and insight. The event took place at the University of Michigan’s Center for Academic Innovation and showed how LED panels could enhance the learning experience. Some examples of this included showing attendees images as small as DNA and as large as Mount Everest. It was a great example of how virtual production can be used outside the film and television industry.

SMPTE Washington DC held an event in conjunction with SBE and the Goddard Amateur Radio Club. The event, which was also open to family and friends, was held at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Covering media technology used by NASA, the evening included a light dinner and a chance to see the center’s exhibits.

SMPTE San Francisco held an event called, “A Practical Method for Multi-Primary Color Systems and Display.” The event described research performed at Baylor University on the display and signal distribution of colors beyond RGB including HDMI, SDI, and ethernet transmission methods, issues in managing different OOTFs, and ways to distribute a three-element data word to an RGB or multi-primary display pixel.

SMPTE Sacramento held a discussion on artificial intelligence CPBE and SMPTE Fellow, Karl Paulsen. The discussion detailed the “human” elements of AI including the history, infrastructure, and future features. Specifically discussing the media element of AI, the conversation emphasized how AI can be a tool while not taking away the artistic human touches that audiences crave.

The SMPTE UK Section held an event for professionals in the middle of their careers. The “Navigating the Changing Media Tech Landscape” event followed a young professional’s event held in January and was a great way for professionals to network with each other and share their work. As usual with SMPTE UK events, there were ample refreshments and media tech insights.

SMPTE Oceania held their March Social in New Zealand. These quarterly socials are a great chance for SMPTE Oceania members to catch up with one another and share progress and insights. Hosted by dentsu Aotearoa, this event saw longtime members and newbies interacting with one another in a very productive way.

In Standards news, SMPTE ST 381-3:2025, Material Exchange Format — Mapping AVC Streams into the MXF Generic Container, was published this week. This standard specifies the mapping of all AVC coding data as defined in ISO/IEC 14496-10 | Rec.
