Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:
January 23rd was a big day for SMPTE! The SMPTE San Francisco section attended the Silicon Valley Video Summit that day, and they made quite the impact. Dr. Robert Ballard gave a keynote on ocean exploration broadcast teams, SMPTE leadership held a student event, and SMPTE’s own Renard T. Jenkins participated in a tech leader roundtable. It was a tremendous event and SMPTE left quite a mark.
Also on the 23rd, the SMPTE Hollywood section attended the eMAM event: New Workflow Solutions for 2024. The media asset management organization has become a Gold Sponsor for the Hollywood section, and Section Chair, Mark Zorn, attended with several other SMPTE leaders. We got a lot of networking done that day!
Last, but not least, on our January 23rd journey, the SMPTE Texas section held a virtual meeting! Texas members had a chance to talk to the next generation of media technology experts, all of whom were students or recent grads of the University of North Texas. The entire meeting was very educational. The future looks bright with these students!
Earlier this month, on January 18th, the Board of Governors met for a regular meeting. Topics that were discussed included SMPTE awards and how to increase the number of people nominated, as well as minor changes to the Operations Manuals to align processes for awards, making them consistent across all awards. Also, please welcome our regional governors and governors at large who are beginning their terms.
Also announced during that Board of Governors meeting was our new Director of Membership, Jewelie Elsbree! Jewelie will be taking over the role from our beloved Roberta Gorman, and we’re very excited to have her in this position. Lisa Kehrle will also be taking over some membership responsibilities. Congrats to them both!
Finally, Registration is still open for the inaugural Power of Color Symposium. Today is the final day you can use the code POC24ATL get 20% off registration! The event will take place Feb 6-7 at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, and will detail advancements in color science. The symposium will cover topics like representation in animation, how AI can help accurately depict skin tones, and much more. Register now!
