Gary Olson CV

Gary Olson is a technology architect, educator, designer and project manager specializing in the transition from traditional media technology and workflows to computer and network centric IP and file based technologies and workflows. Gary is considered a thought leader and technology expert in the broadcast industry. He is an active consultant in IP based broadcast design.

Gary’s career spans a number of changes in the broadcast industry. His projects cover a broad spectrum that include designing new television networks in the US and internationally, setting up satellite transmission facilities, inventing new solutions for broadcast and leading the evolution in the convergence of video and data with the transition to IP. He has a US Patent in streaming media.

The second edition of his book “Planning and Designing the IP Broadcast Facility” has been widely considered the “Bible” in the transition to computer, cloud and network technologies for broadcast. Gary has created education and training courses on IP for broadcast engineers for SBE, IABM and SMPTE. He has published numerous articles on cyber security for broadcast including a presentation at the 2021 NAB. His articles provide technical knowledge to broadcast engineers on the transition to IP and File based technology as the industry moves from proprietary to computer based technologies.

One of Gary’s greatest projects was the design of the first commercial television networks for six central European countries as well as the responsibility and success for launching two of them at the same time, POPTV in Slovenia and PROTV in Romania. He was the project executive leading the integration teams for both projects. Gary designed the first all digital broadcast and production facilitiy for CONCACAF, the soccer federation. Other projects he designed the NBA Referee Instant Replay System, for the United Nations HQ he designed the live, online and archive systems for broadcast and production.

Gary is currently involved in Artificial Intelligence development and the role it will play in media. He is the designer of the first AI technology that curates and correlates video, media, metadata in any format into a single intuitive user display.
