Visual storytellers are gaining access to new vantage points thanks to drones of all shapes and sizes. Drones are creating possibilities for spatial documentation with their unique ability to maneuver through space. In addition to carrying single-lens cameras, drones can carry 360-degree cameras to produce dynamic, immersive 360-degree video content for virtual reality headsets and mobile devices. Ben Kreimer will demonstrate what these future media technologies have to offer storytellers and media consumers. He will discuss hardware configurations and software workflows, including 360-degree video stitching and 3D reconstruction. He also will provide updates on the current drone legal situation.
Ben Kreimer is a journalism technologist and the beta fellow with BuzzFeed’s Open Lab for Journalism, Technology, and the Arts. He’s also an adviser with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Drone Journalism Lab and Nairobi based African skyCAM.¬¬
Kreimer explores the unique perspectives, visual experiences and storytelling potential of drones, 3D reconstructions, 360-degree video, virtual reality, and open-source hardware sensor platforms. He has worked with academic institutions and organizations including Columbia’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism, the M.S. University of Baroda (India), CCTV Africa, Times of India, VICE News, African Wildlife Foundation, Kenya Tourism Board, and the Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project.
