Video Compression: The Basics and Beyond

Many of us who work in the video / broadcast industry have become accustomed to working with files or streams that contain compressed video, i.e. video that has been processed to take up less disk space or bandwidth than it would have done if left in its original form.   Some of us may even have used libraries that perform this compression function for us (e.g. ffmpeg) without really considering how this magic is achieved.

In this presentation, Brian Thomas, will present some of the fundamental techniques used in video compression, discuss some interesting implementation details and review the history and potential future direction of this technology.

About the speaker:  Brian has worked for Telestream for 14 years and is currently Director of Engineering for the group that creates the enterprise applications (which includes all file and live encoding).  As a hands-on engineer, Brian has implemented many video compressors in both hardware and software products.

Telestream will provide pizza, beer, wine, water and soda for this event. Therefore, RSVP’s are required. Please RSVP to msmothers@ewingfoley.com no later than Monday, November 18.

Non-members and guests are welcome to attend. SMPTE annual memberships are available on-line (https://www.smpte.org/join) and start at $75 for an individual and $15 for students.

We hope to see you there.
