Virtual Production has been a rapidly evolving and transformative force in recent years, expanding production capabilities in ways that would have seemed impossible just a decade ago. At the University of Michigan’s Center for Academic Innovation, Virtual Production is providing faculty partners with unprecedented opportunities to lecture in environments as small as DNA, or as large as Mount Everest, and interact with all manner of virtual objects and set pieces. Virtual Production Producer Chiemela Mgbeahuru was kind enough to agree to join us to share his experiences working with the tools and techniques that make cutting edge Virtual Production a reality at the Center for Academic Innovation.

Chiemela is an experienced Emerging Media Producer specializing in digital, broadcast, and XR technologies. As a Virtual Production Producer with the XR and Media Design team, he oversees productions at the University of Michigan’s Center for Academic Innovation XR Studio. He leverages the studio’s cutting-edge technology, including 3D game engines, generative AI, motion tracking and backplate techniques to create immersive media experiences. The XR Studio is equipped with state-of-the-art tools such as Disguise VX4 media servers, Brompton processors, a 1.5mm LED volume, Stype tracking, a RED cinema camera, and a full broadcast suite for multi-camera XR productions.

Before joining the Center for Academic Innovation, Chiemela worked with BBC News as a Broadcast Video Journalist and Producer, contributing to several high-impact live and digital broadcast productions tailored for West African audiences. His role involved producing compelling visual stories that informed and engaged diverse viewerships. Chiemela holds a Master’s degree in Narrative and Emerging Media from The Sidney Poitier New American Film School and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University’s Los Angeles, California Center. During his graduate studies, he honed his expertise in XR storytelling and Virtual Production, deepening his knowledge of immersive media and cutting-edge production technologies.
