Instructors - David Long and Ricardo Figueroa

David Long is director of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction & Creativity (MAGIC) and MAGIC Spell Studios. MAGIC is a university-wide research and development laboratory and a commercial production studio that assists in efforts to bring digital media creations up to marketplace standards and commercialization. Long is a faculty member for the School of Film and Animation at RIT, where he also serves as an associate professor for the motion picture science program.

Ricardo Figueroa, associate professor and chair of motion picture science at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), has extensive experience both as an educator in the area of imaging systems, and as a professional leading various imaging system laboratories at Kodak in the company’s Entertainment Imaging department. Recent publications include “GoPro Array Rig and Workflow” with Michael Richos, “Creating an Autostereoscopic Display Using Lenticular Optics” with Richard Shields, and “Automatic Radiometric Calibration Research.”

Course Overview

Imaging systems are foundational in the Media & Entertainment industry. Understanding the "why" is as important as understanding "how" because the fundamental science and physics behind imaging are key to mastering it. Whether you are early in your career or well into it, and learned along the way, SMPTE's "Imaging System Fundamentals" virtual course, developed in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), helps you take that next step in your professional development. This course will help you gain a deeper understanding of imaging physics, photographic science, human vision and perception, image capture, display technologies and digital image processing.

In addition, you will enrich your technical knowledge and vocabulary so you can contribute more meaningfully to daily operations in your current position, or in an expanded professional role. For anyone working with imaging systems, you can't miss this learning opportunity!

Course Length

This course has 8 modules. Participants will complete one module per week for 8 weeks. Participants should be able to complete each module in 3 hours or less. There will be a live weekly 1-hour Instructor Coaching Session for each of the modules. The day and time of the weekly coaching session will be determined based on the location of course registrants, and we will try to accommodate as many time zones as possible. You will be notified of the actual day and time approximately 1 week prior to class start. All Instructor Coaching Sessions are recorded and posted into the course for you to view at your convenience, in the event you cannot attend the live sessions. Additional time (typically 2 weeks) is provided for participants to complete all assignments an the final exam. At the end of the course, participants who achieve a 70% or higher total course grade will be issued a SMPTE Certificate.

Prerequisites

Prior experience with college-level math and physics are helpfu but not required. The course will introduce these concepts with an emphasis on applied science and practical implementation in modern image capture technology.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the imaging chain and imaging systems engineering topology
  • Explain key concepts in imaging physics, photographic science, optics, image capture, and human vision
  • Discuss the most important laws of math and physics in relation to the nature of light, radiometry, spectrometry, optics, light-matter interaction, and photographic capture
  • Use newly gained technical knowledge and vocabulary to contribute more meaningfully to daily operations in your current position, or in an expanded professional role
