Preparing for the Transition from SDI to ST2110 and ST2059

Best Practices, Lessons Learned and Testing Methodologies

Description

This presentation will be a tutorial on the right questions to ask early on to prepare for the challenges faced in the SDI facility transition to IP based transport video, audio and data. The goal is to help you better understand the realities of preparing your staff and facility for this major move. The presenter will share best practices and lessons learned from his experiences with several SDI facility conversions and greenfield IP/PTP deployments.

The migration toward infrastructure efficiency has brought new complexity requiring the technical staff to gain an understanding of the new techniques needed to design, deploy and monitor these signals. Unlike classic data networks, IP video networks do not have the ability to resend lost packets. Thus, networks must be configured for rock solid smoothness and continuity. A major challenge is how ST2110 works in conjunction with ST2059 PTP for system timing by replacing analog gen lock.

In this session, we will take a look at the basic structure of the ST2110 and ST2059 packets and how variable delay across the network introduces jitter at the receiver and how critical measurements can be made on the stream. Latency in the network can produce out of order packets or corruption of the data causing packets to be dropped. Therefore, it is important to properly configure and monitor the streams for trending errors and be proactive to prevent these errors from impacting the video and audio signal QoS and QoE. The transition from SDI to ST2110 and ST2059 adds to the concerns on how to stay away from the edge of the dreaded digital cliff.
