The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) was founded in 1916 to advance theory and development in the motion imaging field. Today, SMPTE serves its members with the latest technology information and education in a rapidly changing industry. SMPTE is also an accredited and globally-respected industry standards-setting body.

The Philadelphia Section serves SMPTE members in eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware. Our monthly meetings feature technology presentations by experts in their field and the opportunity to tour state-of-the-art facilities.

Philadelphia SMPTE Members Help Local Broadcast Station
Man DTV Phone Bank

Local broadcaster CBS 3 & CW Philly 57 has been running occasional “DTV phone banks” to help their viewers understand the DTV conversion and analog shutdown. The phone banks have been staffed by station and volunteer technical experts who answer viewer’s questions about how to connect DTV converter boxes to their analog televisions, antenna types, and more.

On February 10, 2009, at the invitation of CBS 3 & CW Philly 57’s Michael Colleran, President & General Manager, and Rich Paleski, Director of Broadcast Operations & Engineering, several Philadelphia SMPTE members and others volunteered for duty. Among them were David Horowitz, Walt Bundy, Pete Putman, Michael Muderick, Rick Gamble, and Jim Zoski. Read the broadcaster’s web article below and watch the CBS3 news segments that aired that day.
