HDR in Cinema: Addressing Versioning with a Practical Workflow

Saturday, April 5  |   4:30 PM - 5:15 PM PST

W217-W218

Pass Required: All Access Pass, Premium Conference Pass

Cinematic HDR is becoming a reality, bringing significant improvements in brightness, contrast, and color gamut. Barco’s recently released HDR Lightsteering projector demonstrates the potential of high dynamic range for theatrical presentation.

As multiple companies introduce their own approaches to HDR, the industry faces a growing challenge: content versioning. Different HDR implementations will inevitably require separate deliverables, adding complexity to post-production and distribution.

In this session, we present a technical collaboration between Colorfront and Barco, focused on managing this versioning challenge efficiently. We will outline a practical workflow that simplifies HDR mastering and conversion, ensuring high-quality results across different projection systems. Our findings suggest that, rather than adding complexity, HDR could streamline workflows for cinema.

SMPTE Presents: Making Media Services and Devices Just Work

Pass Required: Open to All Badge Holders

The present and foreseeable future have a landscape of media devices and services existing on-prem, and in private and public clouds.
This hybrid environment is great, and offers broadcasters the ultimate in flexibility to mix and match best of breed products from a variety of vendors. The challenge is that there is no standardized method of discovering and controlling these devices regardless of platform or vendor.
SMPTE’s RIS-OSA is working on a solution to all of this, called Catena. This is a cross-industry effort that is open-source, with security (zero trust) at its core. In this session, Ross Video's Chris Lennon will look at the latest progress on this important initiative.
