Student Chapters

Rochester Institute of Technology

Welcome!

The SMPTE Student Chapter at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is affiliated with the local SMPTE Section in Rochester, NY.  The chapter is run and organized by undergraduate students within the Motion Picture Science (MPS) Bachelor of Science (BS) Program. The MPS instructors serve as advisors to the student chapter.

The RIT Student Chapter brings together students who are looking to pursue careers in the industry of motion pictures and television.  The majority of our current members are interested in the scientific and engineering components of the industry as well as their incorporation into standard workflow and research practices.

SMPTE Chapter Meetings are held on campus every other week.  These meetings feature presentations and panels by industry professionals and allow for students to engage in Q&A sessions.  Some industry speakers are also alumni from the MPS BS Program.  Speakers at chapter meetings have represented a variety of companies including:  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Apple, Canon, Company 3, Dolby Laboratories, LG, Netflix, Ooyala, Portrait Displays, and Sony Pictures Imageworks.  Alongside meetings, the SMPTE Chapter also hosts fun events that have an educational value.

For more information, please contact the chapter’s advisors, Ricardo Figueroa and David Long.

Demystify all the buzzwords floating around display technology like "HDR" and "UHD". Motion Picture Science has the answer!  We will be in Studios A and B all day at Imagine RIT on Saturday, April 25th.
