Presenting Topic: HLG Is Not Scene-referred
Dr. Charles Poynton, Ph.D, Independent Specialist

Charles Poynton is a Fellow of the SMPTE. In 1993, he was awarded SMPTE’s prestigious David Sarnoff Gold Medal, in recognition of his work toward the integration of computing and television technologies. Dr. Charles Poynton graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, with a B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science. He is an independent contractor specializing in the physics, mathematics, engineering, and programming of digital colour (color!) imaging systems, including digital video, HD/UHD/4K/8K (HDTV/UHDTV), VFX/CGI, and DI and digital cinema (D-cinema) systems. Mr. Poynton has worked for many years within television and computing standards organizations to encourage the adoption of standards for the use of television technology in computer environments.

Speaking to the Topic: I assert that all video in distribution is necessarily display-referred. HLG famously claims to be scene-referred, but I argue that can't be the case for any reasonable definition of the term. I offer my succinct (140-character!) definition of scene-referred image data, and I challenge HLG proponents to provide a clear definition that supports their claim.
