Unlocking SMPTE ST 2138 (Catena): A Unified Control Plane for Modern Media Systems

Unlocking SMPTE ST 2138 (Catena): A Unified Control Plane for Modern Media Systems

Description

As broadcast and media infrastructures continue to evolve, the industry faces a growing challenge: managing interoperability and security across a tangle of proprietary control protocols. The SMPTEST2138 suite-known as Catena-offers a modern, standards-based control plane designed to simplify, secure, and unify system control across IP-based media networks.

In this webcast, you’ll learn why Catena was developed and how it addresses real-world control and orchestration problems across studios, production facilities, and cloud-based workflows. Our presenters will walk you through the structure of the ST2138 document suite and demonstrate its core principles of scalable, interoperable, and verifiable control. You’ll also see hands-on examples using the resources available on SMPTE’s official GitHub repository to help you start exploring and testing Catena in your own environment.

By the end of the session, you’ll understand:

  • The motivation and design goals behind the SMPTEST2138 Suite of Standards.
  • How Catena provides a standardized, secure alternative to proprietary control systems.
  • How to access and experiment with reference implementations and tools available on GitHub.
  • Practical steps for evaluating or piloting Catena in your organization’s control architecture.

Join us for a guided introduction to ST2138 and learn how SMPTE’s newest control-plane innovation is paving the way for more interoperable, secure, and future-proof professional media operations.
