Instructor - Ian Trow

He has over 20 years of systems and design experience in High Definition and MPEG video products. Ian’s previous roles to Harmonic were at Thomson (Director of Compression Technology) and Envivio (VP of Technology & Marketing).

Ian was at Tandberg Television for 9 years, as Engineering Group Manager working on MPEG-2 broadcast encoders, and later moving to become Segment and Product Manager with responsibility for satellite, terrestrial, and IP delivery of compressed material. Before Tandberg, he was a design engineer at Snell & Wilcox and Sony Broadcast.

Course Overview

Cloud hosting of media infrastructure is a hot topic within the industry. The commercial and technical benefits are so compelling that most organizations would like to move swiftly ahead with adoption wherever possible. Whether adoption is technically or commercially viable is one of the most challenging issues currently facing media organizations. The SMPTE Media Hosting in The Cloud course aims to address the cloud infrastructure, vendor service offerings, media workflow and commercial issues associated with cloud adoption. Attending participants will be able to examine the key attributes of hosting media applications in the cloud. Popular media workflows will be analyzed alongside the emerging industry best practice to develop a complete approach to developing a cloud adoption strategy and managing the organizational transition.
 
Prerequisites:
Participants should have a basic understanding of Media Standards, Architectures, and Interfaces. Familiarity with OPEX versus CAPEX trade-off associated with Media infrastructure. High Level appreciation of Network and Cloud Deployment techniques.
Familiarity with Production, Broadcast, Cinematic and Social Media Workflows.
