The SMPTE Sum-Up 4-26-2025

November 11, 2025

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. Recently at SMPTE:

SMPTE Toronto hosted a Post NAB Wrap-Up Panel! Panelists included Christian Scarlato from Toronto Metropolitan University, Roy Folkman from Cinesys, Paul Briscoe from TAG Video Systems, and Paul Stechly from Applied Electronics. Those who attended but missed things, and those who weren’t able to go at all, were able to experience the best of the NAB Show 2025.

SMPTE New England hosted a special Zoom on the White Paper titled, “AI Beyond the Hype 2025.” This discussion was a no nonsense talk on the topic of generative AI in film, meant to open minds rather than change them. Attendees learned the ins and outs of AI, which jobs might be affected by it, and how people can learn to embrace it.

SMPTE Education hosted the webcast, “Breaking Language Barriers in Live Broadcasts: AI-Powered Voice Translation for a Global Audience.” The webcast was hosted by John Peck and James Ward of Ai-Media, and the pair introduced their translation AI, LEXI Voice. This innovative tech is able to make real-time live voice translation for live broadcasts and promises to change the viewing experience for people across the world.

CALL FOR PAPERS IS NOW OPEN! SMPTE has opened the call for technical papers for the 2025 Media Technology Summit. The Summit will be held Oct. 13-16 at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E Green St, Pasadena, CA. Unpublished manuscripts will undergo a multipeer review process when submitted as abstracts. Abstracts should fall within the range of 300 to 400 words and will be accepted until May 31. For more information, check out the submission page!

Want to participate in the peer review process? Now you can! We invite you to join the program committee for SMPTE’s annual Media Technology Summit this spring. If you have time available from June through July, and an interest in supporting our peer review of technical papers, we welcome your expertise. To apply, please email education@smpte.org with a short description of your relevant experience and the skills that qualify you for this role.

SMPTE is now accepting nominations for all awards! Any member can submit a nomination as long as they do so by April 24. Student Awards are also open for submissions! This is a great opportunity for students to get a leg up in the industry. Students should submit their applications for these awards by May 1. Apply today!

SMPTE would like to welcome its new and returning corporate members, Dolby Laboratories, BT, Nemal Electronics, INTL. Inc., and Tedial!

The SMPTE Job Board has been updated!
