The SMPTE Sum-Up 2-1-2025

November 11, 2025

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. Recently at SMPTE:

The SMPTE Hollywood Section held a special meeting at Sony Pictures Entertainment in Culver City. The event featured Sony’s Virtual Mixing Environment (VME) and demonstrated its practical applications during film production. They even held a special demonstration before the main event, where the first 48 attendees could have individual experiences with the tech.

Members of SMPTE San Francisco had the opportunity to attend the Silicon Valley Video Summit free of charge on Jan 28. Taking place at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA, this event featured SMPTE heavily, including keynote Ajit Ninan, who was introduced by former SMPTE President, Pat Griffis.

The SMPTE RIS-OSA meetings were held this week. Led by Ross Video’s Chris Lennon, this meeting detailed the current state of RIS-OSA, as well as future projects. These in-person meetings lasted two days and were extremely productive for the community.

SMPTE UK held the Southern addition of their 2025 Young Innovators event this week. Hosted at Sky’s Osterley campus, this event welcomed students and early career experts gathered to listen to talk, have fireside chats, and expand their networks. This event is always a favorite of the UK section, as it creates a relaxed environment for people to grow their careers.

We are deeply saddened to hear about the devastating wildfires impacting many of our friends and colleagues in the Los Angeles area, and we want to extend our heartfelt support to all those who may be affected. During this difficult time, please know that you are not alone—our community is here for you. For a list of resources, click here.
