The SMPTE Sum-Up 3-30-24

March 31, 2024

Welcome to the SMPTE Sum-Up, the weekly publication that details the recent and current events of your favorite standards development organization. This week at SMPTE:

IMPORTANT INFO: Someone is impersonating SMPTE President, Renard T. Jenkins. This phishing scam in question is emailing SMPTE members asking them to send cashapp payments to an account. Renard does not use gmail. SMPTE is doing everything we can to shut down this scam. If you get an email from any SMPTE leader asking for a cashapp payment, send it to junk and report the incident to membership@smpte.org.

The SMPTE RIS-OSA in-person meetings occurred this week in New York City, and they had a lot to cover! The March 26 meeting was all about best practices for live stream distribution. The March 27 meeting updated members on Plenary and Catena. Both days were full of fellowship and progress, and things are looking bright for RIS-OSA.

Section elections have begun, and members have until April 29th to vote! Don’t miss your chance to select your section leadership. SMPTE is your society, and it’s pivotal to choose the leaders that fit your goals for the year. Vote today!

Award nominations are now open for the 2024 Annual Awards Gala! All SMPTE members are able to nominate someone for one of our prestigious awards, which will be given out during the 2024 Media Technology Summit. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 15th, so don’t wait!

Call for Papers for the 2024 Media Technology Summit is open! Original, unpublished manuscripts aligning these goals will undergo multi-peer review when submitted as abstracts. Abstracts should fall within the range of 300 to 400 words and will be accepted from now till May 30. The conference program committee will notify authors of decisions by June 30.

The SMPTE Job Board has been updated! The Federal Reserve Board is seeking a Senior Video Broadcast Specialist. Digital Media Systems Inc. is seeking a Cinema Field Engineer. Apply now!

That’s it for this week’s SMPTE Sum-Up. For more information on past and current events, standards projects, and webcasts, visit our website. See you next week when we report on SMPTE’s Education’s class: Using Psychophysics as a Creative Tool!

To include your upcoming meetings or event in our SUM-UP, please email Russell Poole with the details.
